Springfield
Armory 1911A1
-Overview of
the 1911A1
Standard
issued and secondary weapon of every LAPD SWAT officer, D Platoon
modifies the 1911 to include a match barrel, aluminum trigger,
beavertail grip safety, combat hammer, beveled magazine well,
extended thumb safety, polished feed ram, throated barrel and high
visibility sights. Beaver tail grip safeties are used to help
absorb recoil and to protect the hand against burning and hammer
pinch. Extended thumb safeties are faster and easier to manipulate
than the standard 1911 safety.
Trigger modifications
eliminate any possibility of trigger bounce, a problem caused by the
inertia of the 1911's heavy trigger hitting to soon as the slide slams
forward.
The magazine release button
is found on the left side of the 1911 behind the trigger. When the
release button is pressed the magazine disengages and will free fall of
its own weight. This allows an officer to use his free hand to
manipulate a fresh magazine and accomplish a smooth tactical reload.
The 1911 is modified and
fitted with a Surefire tactical light assembly. The switch for the
light is ergonomically fitted to the pistol grip for ease in handling.
-Primary
Ammunition: .45 ACP 230 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP)
The
230 grain JHP is considered to have excellent expansion reliability and
optimal penetration capability. Muzzle velocity is 835 feet per second;
muzzle energy is 356 foot pounds.
-Secondary
Ammunition: .45 ACP 230 Grain Military Ball Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)
The
230 grain military ball FMJ is a non-expanding bullet designed for
sustained high velocity and maximum penetration. Muzzle velocity is 835
feet per second; muzzle energy is 356 foot pounds.
-Game play
with the 1911A1
The
1911A1 as you already know is your secondary weapon thus use it only as
a last resort. Your primary weapon is almost always a
better weapon to use for a number of reasons. One would be that
the power and accuracy available to the 1911A1 is fairly limited when
compared to any of the primaries. Another disadvantage is that the
1911 doesn't have high-capacity magazines, only eight rounds are
available. However for a pistol the 1911 provides superb power and
during desperate situation, which is when the secondary will most likely
be used, the 1911 can certainly save your life. A good example of
a desperate situation would be when you're currently engaging one or
enemies and your primary's magazine suddenly goes dry. Another
advantage to the 1911 is that since it's a pistol compared to the
primary weapons the 1911 is quite compact and thus easy to control,
making it useful for firing during very fast maneuvers such as dynamic
door breaching. However being that it's a pistol, the 1911's
recoil does make firing multiple rounds harder to do then a shoulder
fired weapon.
Like the MP5SD the 1911
performs best with FMJ rounds because you'll need all the penetration
you can get since the muzzle velocity is relatively low when compared to
something like the MP5A2 or M4A1. So like the MP5SD2 stock up on
FMJ magazines instead of JHP ones. And again be cautious of how
many rounds you fire with the 1911 since it only has 8 rounds per
magazine.
