Biography
Chad earned the
Gatorade California Baseball Player of the Year award as a senior
and was ranked as the nation's top high school prospect. He was
originally drafted out of high school by Atlanta in the first round
(26th overall pick) of the 1995 draft. Chad's father, Lloyd, was an
outfielder in the Philadelphia system (1969-72).Chad Martin
Hutchinson graduated from Torrey Pines High School in Encinitas,
Calif , where he played baseball and football.
He left Stanford
ranked seventh all-time in passing, fifth in career completion
percentage, seventh in career completions, eighth in career
attempts, ninth in total offense and 11th in career touchdown
passes. In three years on the mound for the Cardinals, Hutchinson
compiled a career record of 25-11 and stands eighth all-time at
Stanford in wins and sixth in strikeouts with 299. His career ERA
was 4.80. He helped lead the team to the Pac-10 Southern Division
championship in 1997 and 1998. The Atlanta Braves originally chose
Hutchinson in the first round of the 1995 Major League Baseball
Draft, but he turned down their contract offer to enroll at
Stanford. He signed a professional baseball contract with the St.
Louis Cardinals in July 1998 after being chosen in the second round
of the Major League Baseball Draft, leaving with two years of
football eligibility remaining. Over four seasons in the Cardinals
organization, he moved between Class A and Class AAA ball, compiling
a 17-25 record and a 5.63 ERA.
