JOHN HEBDEN was born abt. 1554. He married ANNE sometime about 1577 and they had five children, all born in Aldfield, near Ripon. The likelihood is that John is of the Ripon/Sawley line.

MARMADUKE HEBDEN was the eldest, born 1579, then came FRANCIS b. 1589, MAUD b. 1584, WILLIAM (1592-1644) & BARBARA b. 1578. Barbara went on to marry a man called John Wilson.

The eldest, MARMADUKE was born during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and would have married sometime around 1605, at the start of the reign of James I of England.

He had five children, all born Aldfield. THOMAS, MARTIN, JOHNb 1614, JANEb 1615 & MARGARETb1618.

One curious thing to note is that MARTIN was born in 1611 and in Keighley a Martin Hebden appears in the 1600s. Could this be the same Martin ?

THOMAS was born 1607 and married a lady called Frances and had two children, Ann & William, born 1641 & 1643 respectively in Aldfield. Nothing further is known of them.

WILLIAM HEBDEN (1592-1644), son of John and brother to Marmaduke, was born in Aldfield but died in Stokesley near York. His wife was called ANNE TOMLINSON and they married in Stokesley in 1615.
This couple had ten children, most of whom nothing further is known.
They were all born in Stokesley and were ELIZABETH b &d. 1615, MERYLL b. 1618 who married ROBERT STOPHERD in 1662, RALPH 1620-1621, ANN b. 1624, JANE b. 1628, & THOMAS (1631-1655).

Then there were three other sons :-
. JOHN HEBDEN was born 1616 and he married Ann Appleby in 1660 and had four children.
For the sake of sanity in trying to read this with all the Marmadukes that crop up, his line is continued, following this link. JOHN & ANN APPELBY’S DESCENDANTS are continued on the linked page.
WILLIAM’s (1622 –1699) nine children were ELIZABETH, MERYL, EALCE, JANE, WILLIAM, JOHN, ELIZABETH and MARMADUKE all born between 1654 and 1667. Nothing is known of them except for Marmaduke who was born in 1667 in Stokesley. He later died in Useby, year unknown. This Marmaduke married in Kirkleatham in 1680 to a lady called ANN UNTHANK and they had one known child, born in 1690 called JOHN

MARMADUKE HEBDEN was born 1633 in Stokesley, and died 1690 in York. He married twice, first to an ELIZABETH MORDEN in 1660 in Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York and then, secondly, to ELIZABETH BARCOMBEin 1662 in Aldborough.
Marmaduke’s shortlived married to ELIZABETH MORDEN produced a daughter DOROTHY who was born in 1660 and died in 1661, possibly when her mother also died.
The second marriage to ELIZABETH BARCOMBE lasted longer and was more prolific, with eight children between 1664 and 1677. Only details of the third child, Marmaduke, are known as he ws the only child that lived beyond childhood. One can only imagine how terrible it must have been to have nine children but only one lives to adulthood.
WILLIAM, b. 1664, York; d. 1665, York.
ELIZABETH b. 1665, York; d. 1666, York.
MARMADUKE b. 1667, York; d. 1743, York
PRISCILLA b. 1669, York; d. 1670, York
JOHN b. 1672, York; d. 1672, York
MARY b. 1674, York; d. 1677, York.
KATHERINE HEBDEN, b. 1677, York.

MARMADUKE the only surviving child of his father’s two marriages, married ESTHER DAWSON in the year 1702 at All Saints, York. Esther was eventually buried there in 1708 after producing five children in almost as many years.
History repeated itself with this Marmaduke’s children. His eldest, another Marmaduke was born and died in 1704, then followed a son George who was born the following year. George lived until aged twenty two. Beatrice was born in 1706 and she lived until at least 1734 as that is when she married a man called Heneage Thomlinson at York Minster. Finally there was a son William who, even assuming he was born the year his mother died, could not have lived longer than aged 12 when he was buried in 1716.

And so another branch of Hebdens dies off……or so it would seem, except that a line does continue through John & Ann Appleby’s children through the link above.
