TIMELINE OF THE LAST YEARS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

  • 285A.D: The Emperor Diocletian Divides the Roman Empire so it is easier to govern. He then tries to destroy the Christians.
  • 306-337: The Emperor Constantine rules.
    • 312: The Emperor Constantine converts to Christianity
    • He lived in the eastern side of the empire, and changed the name of the main city there, from Byzantium to Constantinople!
     
  • 330: Constantine declares Constantinople capital of a Christian Empire.
  • 395: Final division of the Roman Empire into two separate Empires 
               -into an Eastern and a Western Empire
  • The Roman Empire in the West

  • 406: Thousands of Germans cross the Rhine River into the Roman Empire
  • 410: Rome is sacked by the Visigoths
  • 450: Anglo-Saxons invade England
  • 476: Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman emperor in the West is killed.
