The tone within a piece of writing is important to try to recognise because it will help you interpret the writing much more easily. It is the tone of voice that you need to work out without this you will struggle to understand what meaning is being conveyed - especially in the case of poetry.

If you want to show anger, sadness, sarcasm, hatred - this is easy to create in your voice as you speak but putting this into writing is much more difficult. Detecting the tone of voice in writing is important, then, because it allows you to understand what attitude the speaker has towards the subject matter.

This tone of voice might also alter at different points in a piece of writing - and this is particularly so in poetry.
