Research investigation into the K Class Submarines of WWI, and the K13 Submarine Memorial in Carlingford, Sydney.

1. a) During what years was the First World War fought?
b) List the countries that fought on the two sides during the war.

2. When were the K Class submarines built, and why was this new type of submarine developed?
Explain what was to be their special purpose and function, that the British Admiralty was hoping the submarines would provide, in the British war effort?

3. What was unusual about the K Class submarines?
Explain how they were different to earlier submarines, and why they were considered to be revolutionary in design.

4. Using the photographs and information on the research pages, explain the subject of each of the above photographs, and what is happening in the picture.

5. a) Read the source pages to find out and write down where the submarines were built.
     b) Study the maps and pictures on resource page 5: Map: where the K Class Submarines were built Follow the instructions you can read on page 5. Record your findings.
    c) Print off this blank map of Scotland. Paste the map in your book and then mark the following on your map:

1- Loch Ness, 2- Glasgow, 3- Edinburgh, 4- The Clyde River, 5- Put a red cross on the map where the K13 Submarine sank with the loss of life of thirty-one of her crew, 6- Put a cross on the map where you think the photographer of Source A (page 5) was standing at the time he took the photograph. Draw an arrow from the cross, to show the direction he was looking. (hint: Look again at Source B on page 5)

Lightly colour shade the map when you have finished.

6. Study the maps and photographs of the ship building yards along the Clyde River. Source C shows the length of the Clyde between Dumbarton and Glasgow. Source D is just the Glasgow part of that map enlarged.
a) Study Source D and find the Fairfield shipbuilding yard where the K13 Submarine was built. Now write 'K13' on your blank map of Scotland, to show where approximately along the Clyde river this submarine was built.

7. Put yourself in the role of one of the crew aboard the K13 on her first test voyage in Gareloch. Write about what happened on that day. Explain what you think caused your submarine to fail, and what it was like while you waited to be rescued. Then describe the rescue attempts and how you eventually escaped from the submarine.

First research what life and work aboard a WWI submarine was like. See if you can watch part of a submarine movie to get some ideas on how to make your writing more detailed and interesting. Also look again at the pictures linked to the home/ front page/ pictures. But remember to be as historically accurate as possible, and use good creative writing techniques. Use some dialogue and such techniques as similes and metaphors. Also use words that appeal to the reader's senses, such as sound, sight , smell, and touch, to make your writing more interesting. (Length: approximately 1000 words)

8. Using MS Word (or another word processing program) draw up a research chart to show what happened to each of the K Class submarines. Have a chart with 3 columns, one for the Date of the event, one for the Submarine involved, and one to show the Service Events of that submarine. i.e. what event or accident caused damage to the submarine, or loss of life, or the total loss of the submarine.

9. You have been commissioned by the British Admiralty to investigate the rumors circulating through the navy that the K Class submarines are jinxed; That they are cursed by bad luck, which was called 'Hoodoo' by the submariners. Investigate why the K Class Submarines have had so many failures and accidents, which have led to high loss of British life and no impact or losses for the enemy.

After you have written your conclusion, at the end of the report, make a recommendation as to what you suggest should be done with the rest of the K Class Submarines. (Length: approximately 800 words)

10. Read about the K13 Submarine Memorial – Carlingford, Australia . This memorial was the idea of one of the survivors of the K 13 Submarine disaster in Garelock. Find out from the resource pages provide, who this sailor or submariner was, and explain in your own words the string of events in his career, that took him from Britain to Australia.

Explain the series of events, that took him from being a sailor in the British navy assigned to the K 13 Submarine, to being a member of the Royal Australian Navy, assigned to an Australian J Class Submarine. Also explain why he stayed in Australia, and settled in Parramatta (west of Carlingford), when he was discharged from the Australian Navy.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Watch the animation and and read about the exploits of the Australian Submarine AE2 fighting in the Gallipoli campaign. In one to two hundred words, compare the military successes of the K Class submarines to that of Submarine AE2 fighting in the Gallipoli theatre of war in World War I.
