Amaya
Amaya is a web page browser and
editor.
To set the home directory, define the environment
variable AMAYA_USER_HOME to something like D:\data\Fred\My
Documents\My Webs. See the XP Things
Page to see how to set an environment variable.
Audacity
A very good audio recorder.
To
export MP3 files, download 'Lame' to D:\Downloaded
Apps\Folder2\Sound Tools Extract the .zip file to
D:\Apps\Lame
When you try to export an MP3 file for the
first time in Audacity, it will ask where the file “lame_enc.dll”
is.
Avant Browser
If you run this, it becomes the
default browser while it's running. To go back to IE, close
it.
AVG
The anti-virus program that I use.
One important point about installing this. By default it
only updates it's knowledge of viruses every 30 days. You
should change this to daily, to be safe. To do this, run AVG.
Click on 'Program', and select 'AVG control centre'. Select the
'update manager' tab. On this page I have “tick, 10:00, 1,
1, tick”. Also, make sure the scheduled tests are
enabled in the 'scheduler' tab. Tick 'enable scheduled tests'.
BCArchive Encryption
This is ideal for encrypting a few
files/folders, getting a compresses result, which can then be
emailed as an online backup.

Eclipse
This description is for those wanting
to use Eclipse for creating Java programs. This is a very good
development tool. It has very nice context sensitive error
reporting and help. An example project name of proj1 is
used.
For an extensive help & tutorial click on 'Help'
& “Help Contents” in Eclipse.
Create a new project
File.New.Project... Select 'Java'
in the left pane. Type in the project name. Untick 'Use
default' and browse to where you want your files stored or where
they already are.
Where to put the files
You will be using packages, and so
you will want a folder structure like this:
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\src\<uniqueID>\package1\fred.java My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\src\<uniqueID>\package2\joe.java
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes\<uniqueID>\package1\fred.class My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes\<uniqueID>\package2\joe.class
This keeps the source files &
compiled files separate, and using a unique ID prevents clashes
with other developers. To do this you need to change the
“Default output folder:” to be
“proj1\classes\<uniqueID>. The package
specification in each file will then govern into which sub-folder
of this it will go.
Changing files outside Eclipse
If you change the files outside
Eclipse, you can update what Eclipse thinks by right-clicking on
the project folder in the navigator view, and selecting
'Refresh'. This is a bit dangerous !
Setting the location of the source
files
Click on the main project folder, eg
proj1. Select File.Properties Click on “Java Build
Path” This needs to be proj1/src, with nothing else. A
package statement like “uniqueID.proj1” will then
select a file from proj1/src/uniqueID/proj1
Setting the location of the
Workspace file
This is a good idea so that the
workspace file is backed up at the same time as the source
files. Run eclipse from a shortcut as follows:
eclipse
-data “D:\Data\Fred\My Documents\Programs\Eclipse
Workspace\proj1” -showlocation
Email
For Outlook Express, Microsoft
Outlook & Incredimail:
To send email so that the
recipients can't see the other recipients, use “Blind

Outlook click on 'Cc:', then put the addresses in the 'Bcc:'
section. In Incredimail, click on 'Enable Bcc:', and use the
'Bcc:' section.

H9KTimer
This a multi-time zone clock.
Once
you've downloaded H9KTimer, you get a rather yucky clock.
With
the yucky clock in front of you.... Click on "Setup"
on the bottom left. Each line you see is a clock that you can
have displayed. So for example, the 2nd line "Edit 02
[UTC] (Hidden)", is currently displayed, and displays UTC
time. So click on that line. Now you see some options for
that 'clock'. The top line allows you to make it visible or
hidden. At the moment it's visible, so the line reads
"[ON]Show this clock" If you click on that line, it
will change to "[OFF]Show this clock". Now click on
"<<Main" at the bottom middle, and you'll see the
yucky clock again. This time there's no UTC clock
displayed. So, you can repeat that for all the 'clock' lines
in setup. Just leave "local time" - which is your
time in NZ
So, the yucky clock should now just have your
time ! Very useful !!!! So, now you need to make one of the
editable clocks visible at set it up to display the time here in
the UK. So, go into "setup". Click on "Edit
09 [Not in use](hidden)" This is the 'clock' that will
become your UK clock. Click on "[OFF]Show this
clock" That will make it visible. Now you need to set
it up so it show UK time and date. Click on "Name:Not in
use", and type "UK". Now you need to set the
time relative to GMT. We're on GMT at the moment. Check
this page:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=136[/url] So
"Offset:GMT" is OK. If not just click on that line
until it's right. Now to set the date. Click on "Date:Don't
show date" And keep clicking until the format you want is
displayed. I use "as text, wday(Mon-22-Jan)" That
way I know what day it is in NZ ! Finally, click on
"<<Main". Now your yucky clock should be
displaying local time & UK time & date. Oh, I forgot,
if you want the date on the NZ time, go to that clock in set up
and click on the date line as you've just done.
How to download skins:
Click on this link to show the page
with all the current skins. http://www.h9k.com/skin.html
Look
for the one you like. My example screenshot was "Neo
Blue". Click on "download". That will give
you a page with the skin displayed.
Now right-click on the
skin and select "Save as picture..." The best place
to put it is where you downloaded the h9ktimer.exe file. So,
assuming you followed my suggestion, "My
Documents\downloads"
This is the time to download any
others you might like to try. They are very small, so it's
quick.
Right, now open the h9ktimer clock. Click on
"Setup>>" bottom left again - you must be getting
used to clicking on that by now ! Click on "Skins"
at the bottom. You need to navigate to the folder that
contains the skins you've just downloaded. It's not quite
Windows ! So it's something like "C:....." Then
maybe "Documents and settings" Then "Sky"
maybe Then "My Documents" Then
"downloads"
Sorry, it's a bit funny, and because
my folders are on a different partition I can't tell exactly
where yours are.
If you've got to the right place you
should see a list (or one) *.9ks files. Click on the one you
want. You will see what it looks like straight away. Click
"<<Main" to see just the times.
If you
fail to navigate to the right folder, you could download the
skins to C:\skins say. That would be easier to find.
InCD v4.5..5.6
This is my preferred backup tool for
writing to CD-RW disks.
Using “Erase Disk”
doesn't work, and gets it confused ! Well, it worked this time
on a slow disk I need to use without InCD being on it – oh
not it didn't !!!

In Irfanview select File.Batch
Conversion/Rename Select the source folder. Select “All
files (*.*)” or whatever you want. Click on “Add
all” and edit the file list as required.
Create a
destination folder outside Irfanview & then select that in
Irfanview.
Make sure “Batch conversion” is
ticked Tick “Use advanced options” Click on
“Set advanced options” Click on “Resize” Tick
“Preserve aspect ratio” Tick “Use re-sample
function (better quality)” Type in required width eg 400
pixels Click on “Start”
This does 80 images
in about 1 minute.
400 pixels width gives approx 40 to 50
KB files which is fine as 'postcard' sized images.
JAlbum
This program creates an HTML file and
the thumbnail size pics & the required full size pics all
from a list of pics, all ready for you to put on the web.
If
you want to use the FTP facility to upload the files to your
website, note that you should only specify the path to the site.
ie if the full path is ftp://mylongpath/, then just enter
mylongpath.
JCreator
This is an integrated development
environment for Java.
Using Packages
If the project you are working on is
in:
My Documents\Programs\Java\proj1
Create folders below for the packages
as follows:
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\src\<uniqueID> My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes\<uniqueID>
where
<uniqueID> could be your domain name in reverse
ie www.yahoo.com/myname would be used as myname\com\yahoo
Then set the output path as:
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes
You specify a file to be in a package
“<uniqueID>.proj1”. Then you import
“<uniqueID>.proj1”.
The packages, both source & class
files will automatically end up in, for example:
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\src\<uniqueID>\package1\fred.java My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\src\<uniqueID>\package2\joe.java
My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes\<uniqueID>\package1\fred.class My
Documents\Programs\Java\proj1\classes\<uniqueID>\package2\joe.class
Nero Burning Rom
Backing up important CDs, like
Microsoft Office etc If you're packing all your CDs into a
container and shipping them around the world, you might feel like
me that backing them up and storing them separately is a good
idea.
The easiest method is to put the source CD into the
DVD drive and a CD-R disk in the CD-RW drive. Run Nero Burning
Rom & select 'copy CD', without going via the hard drive.
Creating Audio CDs
Run Nero and select 'Create Audio
CD'. Copy the files across, and it will automatically convert
them for you to .cda files. Don't mess with the source files
(like changing their names), while burning the CD !

To eliminate spaces between
paragraphs in HTML docs
You need to change the the styles. Go
into the stylist, under paragraph styles. Right click, for
example, “Text body” and select modify. Select
“Indents & Spaces”. Set the values for “Above

Rename Master
This windows tool is great for
renaming masses of files in clever ways.
To replace
a1.jpg..z9.jpg with 040728_001.jpg..040728_099.jpg where 040728
is today's date, use Replace Tick 'name with' and enter
?cds:Fyymmdd?_?n04? Under 'Counting' set 'start counting at 1,
increment by 1
To just rename all the files from
a1.jpg..z9.jpg to 040727_001.jpg..040727_999.jpg just do as above
but use this string: 040727_?n03?. That way you can rename files
to date & number, where the date isn't today's date.
Steganos Suite 5
This is an encryption program. It can
create 'safes', which require Steganos on the machine in order to
open them, or it can create 'portable safes', where the program
required to open them is included in the safe. Now only one
file in the portable safe varies: sps.sle. So it is
possible to just save this one file each time, and the program
files once. The program files required are:
aclformat.dll aclmount.dll autorun.inf setup.exe slee.dll sps.dll start.exe
– this is the file to run when you want to open the
portable safe steganos.dll
The minimum sps.sle file size is
2MB. The other files amount to about 8.5MB
The sps.sle
file can be created 2x ways: 1. Create a portable safe, which
will create all the files mentioned. 2. Create a safe and
rename the file sps.sle
This means that a normal 'safe'
can be converted into a portable safe by simply renaming it and
putting it into a folder containing the portable safe files. So,
to provide an online backup system, you can upload the portable
safe files, and just upload the safe file you use on a daily
basis. Then if disaster strikes, you can simply download the
portable safe files and the latest safe file, renamed to sps.sle.
How to Backup a Picture Folder
Create a portable safe:
Click on "Steganos Portable Safe"
Click 'next'
Leave it set to CD-ROM (650MB) and click 'next'
Select the destination folder, and change the folder name to "Steganos
Pn" for picture safe 'n'.
Enter a long random, but memorable password. You can't get your
data out without the password!
Click next, and then "display prepackaging drive"
Now copy the files into that window. The maximum file size is
640MB.
Only copy the contents of Pn to Z:
Only when the Z: drive has all the files you want included in
the portable safe, click on 'next' twice.
Exit.
Now use Nero Burning ROM to create a CD-R.
Just drag 'Steganos Pn' into the burning window & click 'burn'
(the red CD icon)
How to Backup A few Random Files
Suppose you have some text files to encrypt and backup on
your GMail account.
Here's how to do it.
First, find out how big the containing folder is. For example
230kb.
Run Steganos, and select 'Portable Safe'.
Select 'Other Media' and set the size to. Unfortunately the
minimum is 2MB.
