Download Accelerators

If you are on dial-up, especially with a 2 hour cut-off, then you need a download manager, that enables you to resume a download if it fails part way through. These also make downloads faster.

Download Accelerator Plus 7
This is the best download manager I've tried, but it does have slightly annoying adverts, and is reported by SpyBot as spyware, although it seems to be OK.

Download Accelerator Plus 7 – Beware spyware on the online downloaded versions !!!!
Download Accelerator Plus 7 – from PCW DVD April 2004 – I use this.
Download Accelerator Plus 7 – from PCW DVD December 2004 (2.42MB)
In: Software->Resources->Download Accelerator Plus 7->dap7.exe
How to transfer via a website:
Rename dap7.exe to dap7.zip
FTP it to the website
Save target as... it onto your machine
Rename back to dap7.exe

Free Download Manager – This is the one I use now. It doesn't seem quite so easy to use, but it does work.

http://www.snipnet/help/eremove.htm

GMail Shell Drive (Thanks Neil71 on my forum)
Use your GMail account a an online storage drive of your computer.

This has so many good features that this is the one I use all the time.

Mozilla Thunderbird (5.8MB)

Pegasus Mail – Suggested by Ram on my forum (v4.21c for Windows 4.5MB)

http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=pimex+mailexpress&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%2521+

An alternative is to use an email application that has a “Blind Carbon Copy” (Bcc) facility.
In Outlook Express & Microsoft Outlook click on 'Cc:', then put the addresses in the 'Bcc:' section.
In Incredimail, click on 'Enable Bcc:', and use the 'Bcc:' section.

Encryption

If you want to stop people nicking your passwords etc from your computer, you need to encrypt the data.

Tools for manipulating photos &creating images.

Canon PhotoStitch 3.1 - comes with a Canon A70 digital camera
Excellent stitching program

Canon Utilities Viewer - comes with a Canon A70 digital camera
C:\Program Files\Canon\PhotoStitch\viewer.exe
Much better viewer for panoramic pictures than “Windows Picture & Fax Viewer”
It scrolls smoothly, and is quicker.
There is also 360view.exe in the same folder, that's very good for panoramic pictures. It wraps them into a full 360 deg image.

VNC Setup

TightVNC won't work with Zone Alarm if it starts too soon. The solution is to install a startup manager, that allows programs to be started at specified intervals. I've found StartRight works well. Just put Zone Alarm near the top, and TightVNC at the bottom with a 10000ms delay.
StartRight (373KB) – This allows you to control the timing of when things start.

Look for VNC Server in

Don't set VNC up as a server. Start it manually.

Security

Your computer needs three things: Anti-virus, Firewall & SpyWare killers.

I recommend the following: AVG for anti-virus, ZoneAlarm for a firewall, and SpyBot + Ad-Aware + CWShredder + HijackThis + SpywareBlaster + Spyware Doctor for spyware prevention & killing.

None of these will be very effective if they are not updated daily. Doing so less regularly would be like driving a car and only putting a seat belt on on some journeys !!!
