Peter and Timmy, exhausted after five nights of 'sleeping' on that chair.

A Birth Story...

On March 25th starting at 20:00 I felt what I thought were contractions. At about 3:00 that night Timmy drove us at the speed of light to the hospital, where I was hooked up to all kinds of machines, to make sure everything was all right. Strangely enough the machines did not pick up on any contractions although I was in considerable discomfort.. After five hours of testing the good doctors at Georgetown University diagnosed me with HELLP-syndrome.

The contractions I thought I had turned out to be my liver being difficult and in order to cure me and prevent any seizures, the baby had to come out. Our boy was not quite ready and was still facing the wrong way, so the doctors first had to try and turn him, after two tries, my boy still liked the way he was facing and a emergency C-section was necessary... a long story short at 15:45 on March 26th 2003 our son was born, 17 3/4 inches tall and 5 lbs 1/2 oz(45 cm & 2.28 kg) . During our stay in the hospital our Peter won the heart of the nurses, who lovingly called him little Peter Peanut and came to visit him all the time, on duty or not.

We finally went home on the 30th of March and for the first time we realized how little our boy was.. His 'going-home' suit was just a little too big..

A hammer for reference...

Upon arrival home, everything seemed to be in total chaos. Luckily we got a lot of help from Grandma Oma, who visited us the 1st until the 8th of April. Oma was the best, 'cause not only did little Peter have the best time listening to stories about all his relatives in Holland, Oma also got the chaos under control and the animals and parents happy and healthy again. Thank you Oma, you are the best.

The Steffes Family Unit now had some time to get to know each other and everything is almost back to normal. Buick seems to get over her jealousy as long as there are enough snackies as a reward for her diaper-detective work and Kit-tan does a great job ignoring the funny smelling new fur-less cat. Slowly but surely the nights get a little bit longer and even mom knows how to change diapers now. Today (the 10th of April) little Peter took his first real bath and for the first time went on a long walk with Buick. Timmy went back to work and Mommy is at home for the time being taking care of Peter Willem.
