GWGF Spring Fling 2003
More of the Story
(Playing ~ "In the Good Old Summertime")
Barbara ..... the
view of the beach and ocean from our balcony
at Golden Sands
The weather did not start
out with promise. On Tuesday morning, we
awoke to tornado watches; there were high winds, but some
of us
braved the beach and relaxed to the sound of the waves
rolling in.
Hilna and Wanda
...... They, along with Nellie Faye and Carolyn
enjoyed early morning walks on the beach. We also came
away
with a nice collection of sea shells as a memento of this
year's Fling.
Ann was spied on the beach late one afternoon. Charlotte
and Olive Belle stayed a bit later on Friday and enjoyed
the beach that morning.
On Tuesday, we
enjoyed lunch at the Holiday Inn Spree. We had
some frustrating moments, but also some good laughs,
trying to find
the Holiday Inn. After deciding we were hopelessly lost,
we decided
to call Mattie on her cell phone for directions. Would
you believe
she and her passengers were also lost! We did finally get
on the
right path, looked over and saw a Holiday Inn Spree van
and said,
"follow that car!"
What a fun trip we
had on the horse-drawn trolley! The trip through
historic Wilmington was most interesting, relaxing and
enjoyable.
Tuesday evening some
attended an Organist Guild Concert at
St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Others of us were too tired
out and opted
to relax/nap before going out to eat. We ventured out for
supper
during thunder, lightning and in rain. (Shades of Prof.
Bass, does
that remind you of "Macbeth?" I didn't plan
that .... really!!
And, of course, there were more than 3 of us.)
Clockwise ...
Earlene, Barbara, Nancy, Carolyn, Theta, Wanda
Our "pinto beans home"
..... We managed to find a wonderful place close
to the Golden Sands, Gulf Stream Restaurant, where we
dined on such
delicacies as pinto beans, cabbage, macaroni and cheese,
hush puppies and banana pudding. And what fun we had
talking to the other patrons!
A bonus that night after the lightning show ...... a
rainbow!
Earlene ...... on
the ferry to South Port Wednesday morn
Theta, Mattie and
Earlene on the ferry to South Port. Yes, Earlene
did comb her hair that morning. The 30-minute trip was
both
extremely windy and lots of fun.
At the end of the ferry
ride, we largely parted ways before going into
South Port. One group headed to Myrtle Beach to eat, shop
and see
a show. Two other groups went on to South Port. We had a
delightful lunch at Ship's Chandler at Waterfront Park.
It was May 7, Barbara's birthday, and we surprised her
with many cards, some
from those who couldn't attend Spring Fling.
Carolyn, Dale and
Marian took to the swing!
After lunch most everyone
walked around to the many shops in the area.
Marian, Dale and I decided to relax in the shade (yes,
the sun was out
on Wednesday) in one of the many swings at the park. This
is where
I get to tell my big RESCUE story!
I decided to walk around a
bit and ventured out on a long pier that
extended pretty far out into the ocean. About halfway
out, I came
across a man fishing and noticed a large stingray on the
pier at
his feet; it had been caught on his line. The poor thing
was
breathing hard, and it hurt to watch him. I finally
convinced the
man to shove the stringray back into the ocean before it
was too late;
he did, and I watched it swim away!
We were back at the Golden
Sands by late afternoon, rested, visited,
and then went back to our "pinto beans restaurant"
for supper.
Others went with us the second night.
