Pre or co requisites: none Selection criteria: An interview with one small portfolio piece that you have created. It can be a writing sample, photograph, artwork, video, music tape, web page, or computer graphic. Junior Year Courses: Printmaking/Fundamentals of Graphic Design: Hands-on projects using three of the common production practices: engraving, relief and silkscreen printing. The goal is the design of logos, stationary, brochures, and posters.
Computer Graphics I: Students will work with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to create a business or organization. A PowerPoint slide show will be created and presented in a corporate manner. An artistic self-running kiosk with multimedia will also be created.
Photography & Darkroom: Principles of photography and developing will be learned. Final projects will be journalistic, artistic, and commercial photographs.
Computer Graphics II: Imaging using Illustrator and PhotoShop. Principles of vector and bitmap art and scanning will be covered. Comics and/or story books will be created. With input from scanning and digital cameras, students will learn to clean up, color correct, optimize and manipulate images. Print, Web and artistic images will be produced.
Senior Year Courses: Video Production I & II: Through learning the art and technology of video, students will work in all aspects of creation and production of videos. Animation and computer editing will also be covered. A senior video will be created. Computer Graphics III: Publication using Quark Xpress. Students will learn principles of publication design. Graphics will be produced for student publications. Students will create business cards, stationery, and a magazine. Journalism I & II: Using a combination of theory and practice, students will learn the basics of news writing which will include print, broadcast, scripts and treatments. Computer Graphics IV: Web Design using HTML, Flash & Dreamweaver. Students will learn why the web looks like it does and how to be a part of creating it. HTML is the basis of the Web, Flash creates fast animations for the Web and Dreamweaver creates major Web sites. DESCRIPTION: Media Communications, in all its forms, is among the fastest growing and evolving industries in the world today. By combining fundamental theory with hands-on work, the Media Communications Technology major will work to prepare students for college-level study in any of the areas in this dynamic cutting edge industry. Internships: Seniors who show responsibility, technical ability and desire will be assigned internships, spending 3 to 5 days per week working with professionals. Placements currently include Merrill Lynch, Ogilvy & Mather, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Miramax and a new dot.com: MetroCommute.com THE AVAILABILITY OF THE ABOVE COURSES IS ALWAYS DEPENDENT ON BOARD OF EDUCATION FUNDING.
