Seth was born in Grafton, NH.
Sometime around 1832 he moved to New Bedford, MA.
In 1839, Seth Martin and his 1st wife Mary came back to Grafton and quit claimed deeded land over to his brother, Jonathan Martin. On this deed it states Seth was married to a Mary and living in New Bedford, MA where he was a tanner.
Burial: Borlin Cemetery, Greene County, Illinois

In the Grafton County Registry of Deeds:

Grantee: Jonathan H. Martin Residence: Grafton

Date of Deed : 1 Feb 1839

Consideration: 120.00

Description: Quitclaim. Homestead farm of my father Seth Martin late of Grafton, deceased containing 145 acres.

Acknowledged: 1 Feb 1839

Recorded 13 Feb 1839.

Upon researching Massachusetts and New Hampshire records repeatedly, a marriage between Seth and Mary can not be located. Several researchers have also checked in New Bedford Vital records and there is not a listing of a death for Mary, his wife. However, he married Rhoda in 1850 in Missouri so something happened to Mary someplace. There is not a family page entered in this book since the information on Mary is lacking.

Seth cannot be located in the United States 1860 census. I am not sure if it is our Seth Martin and family, but have entered information for the 1840 census below. In 1830 he appears in NH, in 1850 Callaway County, Missouri, in 1870 in Calhoun County, Illinois and in 1879 he died in Greene County, Illinois. He definitely is not in the 1860 Federal census of Missouri according to the archives, which means he wasn't living there at that time. Several of Rhoda's brothers were living in Calhoun County at the same time she was in 1870 and are listed also in the census.

There are no tax records listed for Seth, which indicates he didn't own any land. Upon coming to Greene County he moved to a town called Woodville, Illinois.

Upon information from Phyllis Martin Suhre, Seth and Rhoda had an infant who died sometime after 1854. As deaths were not reported in Missouri at that time, I can find no record of this.

Seth's movements were Grafton, NH to New Bedford, MA to Callaway County, Missouri to Butler County, Missouri to ??? to Calhoun County, Illinois to Greene County, Illinois.

I have looked extensively for Seth Martin in the 1840 census, the only one that I could locate that could possibly be him but might not be him at all is in Madison County, Illinois 1840 census. If it is him, what happened to his wife and children is a mystery. I am listing this in case someone wants to further follow up on it at a later date.
