A WIN AT LAST |
|
West End ended their poor run of form of late, scoring four goals to see off a depleted Latimers side to secure their first win in the last seven games and keep their promotion campaign on course. Amidst scenes echoing last week's chaotic shambles when Saints could only muster nine men for the start of the game versus Victoria Sports, it was Latimers who this time found themselves two men down at kick off. Despite their numerical advantage West End started very slowly, though Saints were somewhat hindered by a number of baffling refereeing decisions in favour of the home side. Dan Egan's livewire running was proving a constant menace, and Saints should have had a penalty when the striker's run through was blatantly checked by a head lock, only to see the foul given against him. George Winfield went close close with a run through the defense but saw his shot narrowly slip past the wrong side of the post, before Simon Bates gave West End the lead on the half hour mark. Proving for the second time this season that his right foot is not just for standing on, Bates reacted first from a cleared corner to swing his leg at the ball and see it loop over the keeper and into the top corner. And Saints made it two shortly before half-time when Dan Egan dispossessed the keeper only to be hacked down for a blatant penalty. George Winfield stepped up to convert with ease. With two players turning up at half-time at last this was an eleven versus eleven match, and Saints came under more pressure as their opponents worked the ball very well, without creating any real goal scoring opportunities. At the other end Egan went close with an excellently worked passing move out of defense, his eventual shot going narrowly wide. Egan was not to be denied the goal he deserved though, as a few minutes later he slotted home Saints third when through one on one. A cutting move through the middle let in George WInfield and his cool chip over the keeper made it four for West End and put this game out of reach. Andy Collins had work to do, tipping over a stinging shot from the edge of the area. And from the ensuing corner Latimers scored their consolation with a far post header, but it was far too little too late as Saints held on comfortably for all three points.
