Starting in 1965 a group of people got together:
Bob Close, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Syd Barrett
and Nick Mason, to form a group called Sigma 6.
A bit later Bob dropped out (bet you he still regrets it) and the line up became the following:Syd
Barrett (guitar), Richard Wright (pianist), Roger Waters
(bass) and on the drums Nick Mason.
They went through some different names (The Screaming Abdabs, T-Set, The Meggadeaths, and The Architectural Abdabs) and through
some different styles (at one time they did R&B-ugh.). Then Barrett came up with the name Pink Floyd (derrived from jazzmen FLOYD Council and PINK Anderson).
They put out their first album "Piper at the Gates
of Dawn under the name THE Pink Floyd, later on they dropped ThE, for obvious reasons.
Syd was a heavy acidhead and was having a few problems gripping his new role as rock star. I've heard that during one concert he simply sat down and twanged
his guitar oblivious to his sorroundings. So he was asked to leave and David Gilmour (a friend of Syd) was
hired.
Later on they made history with the Dark Side of the Moon (25 million copies sold and on top of billboard
charts for 14 years, i've heard that 40 copies are sold
daily) and the Wall.
Eventually Wright's and Mason's roles became less and less important durring the late 70's and 80's (Wright actually left the band durring the early 80's, i
think it was in the 80's...).
After the Final Cut (double meaning?) Waters released a solo (the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking) and
then left the band. In 1989 (?), after he left the band, Water's sued Pink Floyd for continuing to tour under the
respective name w/o Waters in it, after a hard court battle a settlement was achieved (i'm not 100% sure if
Floyd won it or the settlement was the answer, i'm pretty sure it was a settlement though).
