Aquila

1924-The keel of the merchant vessel Roma is laid down.

1926-The Roma is launched.

September 1926-The Roma is commissioned.

October 1940-The ex-merchant liner Roma is taken over by the Marina Militare Italiana and transferred to Ansaldo shipyards in Genoa. A planned conversion on the vessel begins, with the entire inside of the ship being removed, cruiser engines replacing the merchant engines.

March 1942-The Roma is renamed the Aquila.

September 8, 1943-The nearly completed Aquila is sabotaged by the Italians to prevent being used by the German Navy.

June 16, 1944-The Aquila is struck by bombs during an Allied air raid.

April 19, 1945-The Aquila is damaged by Limpet mines, then scuttled to prevent usage by Allies after World War II.

1946-The Aquila is raised and returned to Italy to be considered for possible completion and entering service with the Marina Militare. After the damage assessment was completed, it was decided against.

1951-The Aquila is scrapped.
