David and Marsha Grady Family
Our SOLOMON Family

Marsha's third great-grandmother was Elizabeth Ann SOLOMON, daughter of John G. SOLOMON and Sarah A. GODBOLT (or GODBOLD).

Our SOLOMONs were another early Monroe County, Alabama, family - appearing in the Federal Census there as early as 1830. John G. SOLOMON was born 3 January 1797 in South Carolina. He married Sarah A. GODBOLT (possibly spelled GODBOLD) probably in South Carolina. They migrated to Monroe County, Alabama, probably between 1820-1829.

John is reported by some researchers to be the son of John SOLOMON and Cressy WRENN. Researchers have found record of their marriage in Franklin County, North Carolina on 22 December 1795. This John SOLOMON is reported to have been born about 1770, son of a Peter SOLOMON and Margaret STARK. Marsha has discovered no supporting documentation for this claim.

John G. SOLOMON and Sarah A. GODBOLT had twelve children:
- Robert SOLOMON (born 1816). Married Sarah J. MARSHALL.
- Tobias SOLOMON (about 1818-before 1857). Married (1) Rebecca FEAT and (2) Jane Minerva GOODWIN.
- Elizabeth Ann SOLOMON (1821-1903). Married John Washington WRIGHT.
- Mary Caroline SOLOMON (1829-1903). Married Samuel WRIGHT (he was a brother of John Washington WRIGHT's).
- Sarah A. SOLOMON (1829-1895). Married Ruben Jasper EVERS.
- John Abraham SOLOMON (1830-1864). John is the first of the children reported to have been born in Monroe County, Alabama. Married Elizabeth MYRICK.
- Ann Mariah SOLOMON (1832-1915). Married John Washington WILLIAMSON.
- Ellen Eliza SOLOMON (1833-aft. 1900)
- James Benjamin SOLOMON (1835-before 1865). Married Sarah GRIMES.
- Leonard Jordan SOLOMON (1836-1875). Married Virginia STIFFLEMIRE.
- William Thomas SOLOMON (1833-1906). Married (1) Mary Jo Uknown and (2) Ann Elizabeth MOONEY.
- Levi D. SOLOMON (bet. 1840-41-1898). Married Nancy J. MAYO.

John G. SOLOMON died sometime after 19 May 1863 in Monroe County. His wife, Sarah GODBOLT SOLOMON, died after 1866. They are buried at Solomon Cemetery in Monroe County.

More information on the family of Elizabeth Ann SOLOMON and John Washington WRIGHT can be found on Marsha's WRIGHT Page.

Burning question: The surname "SOLOMON" is often associated with Jewish families. Many of the given names used within this family (such as Jordan, Mariah, Sarah, Levi, Abraham and others can often be found in Jewish families). While the thought does disturbs Marsha's Primitive Baptist and Southern Baptist relatives, she has often wondered if the family descends from a Jewish line of SOLOMONs somewhere in history. Just speculation, but Marsha would be interested in any information on John G. SOLOMON's line to help answer this question!
