Our WRIGHT Family

Marsha's WRIGHT ancestry can be traced back to William WRIGHT, who was born before 1755. William WRIGHT had two sons: William WRIGHT and George WRIGHT. There is little primary documentation to support this part of the family history, so there are many questions surrounding the elder William WRIGHT, his exact dates of birth and death, who his parents and siblings were, where he was prior to North Carolina, who he married and whether he had other children.

George WRIGHT was born 1770 in Richmond County, North Carolina. Some sources indicate he was born in Ireland, which might be a clue as to the origins of his father, but there has been no proof to support this claim. He married Sabra PATE, daughter of Thoroughgood PATE and Winifred STEWART, on 6 December 1791.

George WRIGHT died by about 27 September 1836 in Rockdale, Cleveland County, North Carolina. His wife, Sabra, died before July 1846, probably in Richmond County, North Carolina. Her will, which was recorded in Richmond County on 14 April 1844, only references her two youngest children, John and James.

George and Sabra WRIGHT are reported to have ten children: Daniel P. WRIGHT (1795-1849); Lucy WRIGHT (1800-1882); Samuel WRIGHT (1802-1848); Arthur Phillip WRIGHT (1804-1868); George WRIGHT, Jr. (1806-?); Cameron WRIGHT (1808-1846); William P. WRIGHT (1811-1862); Duncan Cameron WRIGHT (1813-1898); John P. WRIGHT (1818); and James Cameron WRIGHT (1818-1892).

Three of the WRIGHT sons married GODBOLDs - Daniel P. WRIGHT to Ellender GODBOLD, daughter of Stephen GODBOLD and Annie GRICE; William P. WRIGHT to Frances GODBOLD, sister of Ellender; and Duncan Cameron WRIGHT to Mariah Catherine GODBOLD, daughter of Reason GODBOLD and Sarah MCLAURIN.

Daniel P. WRIGHT and Ellender GODBOLD were married about 1819 in Summerville, South Carolina. Between 1820 and 1830, they moved by covered wagon to the Monroe County area of Alabama, along with members of the ROBERSON, HARRISON and SAWYER families. Daniel appears in the 1820 Federal Census in Marion County, South Carolina (near his GODBOLD in-laws), and by 1830 was listed in Monroe County, Alabama.

Daniel WRIGHT was killed in a fall from his horse in November 1849 and is buried in Old Texas, Monroe County, Alabama. Ellender continued to hold the family together following her husband's death.

On 4 August 1876, Ellender appeared before the U.S. Commissioner of Claims to appeal the loss of her family's meat supply, 200 bushels of corn and fodder, worth about $302.50, which was take during the night of 18 April 1865 by Union General Smith for the use of his troops. She was 72 years old at the time.

Ellender died sometime between 1876-1880, and is buried at Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery in Old Texas, Alabama.

Daniel and Ellender had fourteen children:

John W. WRIGHT died 16 July 1907 in Old Texas, where he is possibly buried. His wife Elizabeth died 3 July 1903 in Old Texas and is buried at Solomon Cemetery in Monroe County.

John and Elizabeth Ann had eleven children:
