We are sorry that Angelfire (our web service provider) have recently made it compulsory to include adverts on our pages. While we accept it is annoying, we also have to accept that they need some 'return' - although we are still working on them!
The happy participants pictured before the final night dinner dance at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club-
What a fine bunch!!
The re-union attracted McLemans' not only from around Scotland, but from Canada, USA, South Africa, and even England!
THE MCLEMAN CREST
Below is the family (Lamont) crest and tartan
The derivation of our name is believed to be from 'McLamont-= Son of Lawman'
The Lamont motto is NE PARCAS NEC SPERNAS - "Neither Spare Nor Dispose"
The Events
With their first 'triumph' of organisation it was arranged (despite the poor summer so far this year) that the sun should shine all week and that the packed programme of events would be off to a flying start
Tuesday 27th :
The first evening consisted of a brief introductory talk welcoming visitors and guests to the gathering, a meal and the chance to meet relatives old and new. Some had arrived seeking their links, others to put faces to names on the family trees. One of the interesting discussions included the derivation of the name and history. The consensus seemed to be that the McLemans' are part of the Lamont Clan and not linked to McLennans (part of the McLeod Clan). This investigation has still a bit to run!
Representatives from each family group introduced their own family and guests to the reunion gathering, and gave a brief outline of their family structure and background. The evening continued with a genealogical presentation, and a look at family ancestry records and photographs available and held by family visitors to the reunion.
'The McLeman Crest' mugs and placemats that were handed out to the guests at the re-union - (another nice touch, boys!)
Wednesday 28th
This day was a full day in, on and around Loch Ness including Urquhart Castle
and Fort Augustus, and included a boat cruise on Loch Ness
The evening included a meal with a talk from James Marshall from Fraserburgh who is a direct descendant of Christian Watt and an 'expert' on the descendants of 'Highland' Donald McLeman in Fraserburgh.
The night was rounded off with a 'Scottish Evening' at the Cummings Hotel where a superb show was enjoyed by all visitors (both from near and far!)
Thursday 29th
We explored Grantown on Spey and had the opportunity to tour the local 'Smokers' (traditional fish curing process) before heading West to the Glenfiddich Whisky distillery, sampling some twelve year old malts and witnessing the traditional skills of the local cooperage. We also visited Brodie Country Fare on the way back.
In the evening we had an evening out at The Eden Court Theatre where we saw the 'Barra MacNeils Singers', one of Canada's most talented and recognised groups with their captivating vocals and extraordinary musicianship.
Friday 30th
For those that lasted the pace the final day of our tour of exploration included a visit to Fort George the mightiest fortification in Britain and then to Cawdor Castle and Culloden Battlefield.
In the evening the final event of the gathering was held as a dinner dance at the Nairn Golf Club and was an opportunity for more 'McLeman Networking' and to bid farewell to visitors and guests.
The dancing was enjoyed by young and old!
