Pictures While at HHC, Third Armored Division (Spearhead)

Frankfurt am Main

In my second year in Germany, I started to hang around on the base much, much more. Before then, when I wasn't in school or burning the midnight oil in the motor pool, I was always out "on the [German] economy," as they used to say. The big reason that I did (hang around the base so often) was because I found some new friends. I went where they went; they went where I went. We always did things by the bunch; stuck together like glue.

Seán & Ed

One of my best buddies, Ed. He was one of the reasons I started to hang out the base frequently. This picture was taken when I dropped him off at the Rhein-Main air base for his return to the U.S.A.

Vance & Seán

Another of my best buddies, Vance. We were famous for a beering it up at the EM club and also at the local German restaurant (Zum Deutschen Eck).

Toga !

A Toga party at the E.M. club on the base. The girl in the purple was "Pepe" — one of our clique's best friends.

0K, Toga Time...

Also the night of the Toga party, was this shot. Unfortunately, I cannot remember this girl's name. She used to call me "Mr. Foley" all the time (instead of Specialist Foley, or just Seán. She said "it fit."

Fun, always, at the E. M. club

God, I remember all of the faces, but I no longer remember the names of all the people – we had a rip-roaring time at the E. M. club. The Korean girl (Li, I think) was a good friend of Robin's and mine. The funniest story I remember from her was that when she first came to the West, she thought "they all look bewildered," owing to our rounder eyes. Boy, were we rolling on the floor laughing with that one.
I like the guy on the right of this picture.

Sweet Antagonist

Robin and I. She was from Missouri, and she used to like to needle me about being born in Iowa. Her favorite joke was that they needed 'astro turf' at the football stadiums in Iowa in order to keep the cheerleaders from grazing on the real grass. I used to tell her that Missouri was the Show-Me-How-to-Drive state. Yea, I loved her. She used to tell me that her family had money. I felt she could do much better than me. So we never went all the way. Years later I still remember her.

Crazy Seán

We had this inside joke about sunglasses (in reference to Augenspielen). One day in the motor pool, I got some streak of dirt or something on my face. It looked like a little (one-sided) mustachio, so I did the same thing to the other side and went around the whole day like that, since no one told me about the first marking.

Later in the day, a cook came up to me and said that people were "making fun" of me for it. I told her that was fine – that we need to have a few laughs around the place and that I didn't care if others joked about me for it. I had worse situations to deal with than that, certainly. So anyway, I made sure to get a picture snapped of it.

Moto-Volks

This was about half the newer motor pool crew, taken not all that long before I left Germany. Wenner on the left is the only one I can recall by name anymore. We were on a 'Volks March' I forget how many klicks (kilometers) it was, but pretty easy stuff for Army boys. I was kind of amazed that we could walk the streets and pathways with brew. One (Army) officer still chewed us out for it, though.

Regenbogen am Süden Blick

Saw this shortly before I had left town. I had forgotten to tell one of my German friends that I was leaving the country. He failed to write me back, so I guess he was pissed. The rainbow seemed to confirm for me that things were actually going right . . . For the best, despite a few misgivings.

Like I had mentioned, this was my second of two years on Drake Kaserne. While I had applied for a transfer to Bremerhaven, it failed to reach whomever it was supposed to have reached before I was cut on orders for Fort Campbell in the Mid-south. I would be in the 101st Airborne division. Hearing of this, I did not try to change it, even though a few people tried to get me to Extend (i.e. apply to remain in Frankfurt longer). I was resigned to leaving. I needed some kind of change.
