 Self-Management Skills
________________________________
I. Objectives in Self Management
    A.  Space Control
Allow students to have a choice in where
they would like to "be" when conducting
an activity.  Review rules about staying at
least an arm's length away from other
children.  Call it "finding your own space".

    B.  Focus
Children need to learn how to focus on just
one single element or aspect of something,
while practicing how to leave out all
            distractions.

    C.    Concentration
While focusing, childen need to be taught
to think very "hard" about the thing they
are focusing on, and to listen to the details
they will need to know to complete an
            activity.

    D.    Following Directions
    E.    Listening
    F.    Contributing
Children need to know that their ideas
and contributions are worthwhile, and the
life of the lesson.  No child should feel
pressured, but the group must learn that
it is essential to self-learning, and to the
group's learning that each child make a
            real effort to contribute.

    G.    Selection of Ideas
Many times, the selection of ideas will
come from the story that is being read, or
the skill that is being reinforced. Whenever
children need to choose within groups, use
"Ask, don't TELL!" rule, which encourages
children to first ask each other if it's OK to
to be the "Blue" partner, or the "tree", or
the Statue Maker today.  Taking turns and
cooperation skills will be enhanced when
            children ask first!

II.  Skills of Drama

    A.     Imagination
    B.    Concentration
Concentration in drama, as in self-
Management, is the ability to focus on
the process of enacting, or performing
             a particular role.

    C.    Imitation
To be able to "imitate" or copy something
or someone.  Much of art is copying.

    D.    Transformation
To be able to transform, or "change", an
inanimate object via imagination and acting
is the ability to affect change in the minds
of others.  "Make-believe" is one word for
it, but it can help students take ownership
of ideas and words, as well as internalize
            abstract concepts.
