Moves in the Field
Skaters used to be required to do school figures, a.k.a. "patch", so that they could learn and master proper edge technique. Now skaters in the United States are instead required to perform moves in the field, which, besides edge quality, also emphasize extension, power, quickness, and a variety of other skills. There is much debate as to how much good "moves" actually do to help a skater's skill advancement, but in truth, it is really better than nothing.
Moves in the field includes some of the basic skating moves, as well as some slightly more complicated field moves, and incorporates them into footwork patterns which the skaters must perform. A moves test may have anywhere from only three to up to seven different patterns.
