Music to My Ears

Jessica pulled a lock of her hair behind her ears and stared at her reflection in the full mirror that was on the door of her room. I think I actually look ok. She thought, smiling numbly. She had vowed to lose weight and find out what was going on with Evan...what was a better way to do both when she could go to concert where there would be dancing and plenty of Evan.

After tying the loose string that tied the back of Jessica's backless shirt together and coating her lips with lip gloss, Jessica headed into her sister's room.

"Hey, Lizzie. Ready to go boogie?" Jessica asked as she walked in the room, without knocking as usual. Elizabeth stared at Jessica.

"You're going with us?" She asked bluntly.

"Sure, Evan invited me...Is it ok that I come?" Jessica's eyes became a little bigger and a little more round.

"Of course. I was just a little surprised. You look great, Jess." Elizabeth said, smiling.

"Thanks. When are we going?"

"Um, now-ish. Conner should be here..." Suddenly the door bell rang.

"Well, he is here now, I guess."

"Let's go." Jessica said, smiling fondly. She tucked her arm through Elizabeth's and tugged her down the stairs.

Evan waited nervously for his friends to arrive. God I hope Jessica doesn't hate me. He thought numbly. Anger washed over his body as he continued to chid himself on how stupid it was to ask Jessica to the concert.

"I should have known better." He muttered, kicking a rock with the toe of his brown work boots.

"Hey, Evan!" A girl's voice squealed. Evan looked up and Tia, Elizabeth, Andy, Conner, and Jessica were headed right towards him. Evan gulped down a breath of fresh air.

"Hi." He managed as the group of friends came closer. "Where are um, Maria and Ken?" He asked.

"They bailed." Andy said rolling his eyes. "I think they must have spent too much time around Tia and Angel." Tia pushed Andy and groaned.

"You are such a dork." She said.

The group laughed and as they started to make their way towards the huge doors that led into the convention center, everyone had already paired off, leading Jessica to follow the group with Evan.

"Jess...I'm really sorry about what I said this afternoon." Evan whispered softly as he slid closer to Jessica. He ran a hand through his hair and gave her a sheepish smile.

Jessica actually smiled back. Showing her beautiful teeth always got Evan's spirits to brighten. "Hey, it's not a biggie. You didn't do it on purpose. Come on, we're here to have fun!" She exclaimed, weaving her hand through his arm. Evan felt his heart speed up.

"Sweetie, that was music to my ears." He said, and pulled her closer.

Maybe getting her to like him wouldn't be too much of a problem after all.
