The leaves
are falling; there is crispness to the air
Pumpkins,
corn stalks, and gourds are everywhere.
Showing off
the richness of God’s plentiful earth
Thoughts turn
to blessings, counting their worth.
For a bereaved
parent, blessings are sometimes hard to find
We know they
are there, people have been so kind.
We may have
our homes, our spouses, and our other children
We may have
health, but we want back, the life that is now forbidden.
All our blessings
are overshadowed, so we have to ponder deep
Look around
us, and create new memories for our heart to keep.
We want to
be grateful for the years with our children that we had
Although we
wanted more, does that make us bad?
Our holiday
table will always have an empty chair
So it is then
our memories of our child, we need to share
Keep my child
in the holidays to my family I implore
He will always
have a place at my table, forevermore.
As I light
the candles, on this Thanksgiving Day
For all bereaved
parents I will pray.
Give us grateful
hearts Lord, in spite of our sorrow
Let us be
grateful for one more tomorrow.

The
silence of that empty chair is so deafening on holidays. Being grateful
as we mourn the death of our children is one of the most difficult things
for a bereaved parent to come to. Everyone in my family tends to tiptoe
around the empty chair, but in their hearts he lives on. The death of my
son, has effected his stepbrothers and sister, deeply, but in that sorrow
we have gained blessings also, by coming together more closely then we
have ever been, and no longer taking for granted that we will always have
tomorrow.
So though
the sadness of his loss is ever present at our holiday table, the light
of the love that he gave continues to shine. So as our children, Cory’s
wife, and his precious child, all join hands around the table, the circle
will not be broken, for Cory will be in our midst, in the most special
place of all………..our hearts.
