~THE
EMPTY ROOM~
When I opened
the door, the room was bare
Where were
my friends, no one was there.
Where has
everyone gone?
Without them
by my side, how do I carry on?
The room where
we could share
The pain the
world no longer understands
Could share
the tears of unrelenting grief
Holding onto
each other’s hands.
My place of
love and safety
My safe harbor
in the night
When fearful
dreams would awaken me
There was
always a friend in sight.
My oasis in
the storm of life
To gather
for myself once again
The strength
to live and start life over
Was held in
this room of compassionate friends.
Faced the
world daily, as bravely as I could
Waiting for
the time to share with those that would
Understand
the pain felt deep inside
Of a parent
who’s child has died.
A place that
we could share the tears, but laughter too
Gaining strength
to see yet another day through
Without our
precious children in our lives
A place that
taught us we could and would survive.
I pray that
all my precious friends are well
So saddened
by this farewell
Until we can
meet once again
Love to all
from this compassionate friend.
This
poem was written upon learning of the closing of the 24-hour Compassionate
Friends chatroom. It has saddened my heart, and those of all of us that
gave of our time and love to not only share our own personal grief, but
to reach out and touch the hearts of the newly bereaved. In doing
so not only was it a place of comfort, it aided in our own healing, being
able to put our own grief aside to help others.
Grief has no
schedule, we have good days and bad days, and the beauty of this room was
that no matter where we found ourselves on this journey, there was always
a hand waiting to lift us up, no matter what time of day or night. I know
personally of many lives this room has saved, when the despondency of losing
our children was more than we could bare. The light was on; we were welcomed,
hugged and supported in those difficult hours.
To no longer
have this option is a travesty beyond words. I pray daily that this decision
is reversed, and that we can all come together once again. In the meantime,
to all my precious friends, know that you are loved and thought about daily,
I love you all
