Policeman's Ball

Part Five

Laura hurried around helping people if they needed it. She thinks 'Boy we are somewhat Lucky, many more people could have gotten hurt.'

She sees Lucky run over to Liz, glad that the both of them are fine. When she sees a stretcher go over to where they are she starts to make he way over to them. She doesn't quite make it in time because of the way the crowd is reacting but she sees both Liz and Lucky follow the paramedics. She then realizes that it is Pat on the stretcher and she hopes that Lucky will call her later to let her know what is wrong with Pat.

***

Lucky and Liz climbed into the front of the ambulance. The paramedic in the back began to ask Liz questions about Pat’s health.

"I'm not sure if I know anything. I lost my memory a couple of days ago."

"Do you know if he had chemotheorpy lately? This sort of collapse is typical of people who having stopped getting chemotherapy."

"I... I... don't know," Liz's eyes whelled up with tears, "Lucky, I feel so helpless..."

"Liz it's ok, don't cry." Lucky took Liz into his arms and held her.

The abulance pulled in behind Mac’s.

As the paramedics pushed through the ambulance bay at GH a nurse came up to her and Lucky and told them they had to go to the waiting room and that a doctor might come and talk to them.

"Do you know his parents?" asked the nurse.

"I think so..." she looks at Lucky asking for help. "But I can't remember... AGAIN!" her frustration with the lack of information for the doctors makes her angry. "What am I supposed to do?" she looks to Lucky for an answer.

"Call your grandmother she will know what to do." Lucky says, pulling her into his arms to calm her down.

"Oh! Lucky. You're right." she ran her hands over her face in attempt to dry her eyes.

"Audrey Hardy, she works here as a nurse. She's in tonight. She'll know more about Pat than I do." Liz said to the nurse.

The nurse nodded, returned to the triage desk and had Audrey paged.

A few moments later the triage desk phone rang.

"Triage," the nurse answered.

"Hello, Audrey. How are you? That's good. Well, I have your grand-daughter down here with young Mr. Spencer. They came in with the ambulances from the Policeman's Ball...yes...everyone seems fine except for commissoner Scorpio and Miss Webber's friend Pat...yes, he was just found unconcious and was bleeding from the nose...no he was just found like that. The doctors are checking him now...yes, Audrey. Do you know anything about his medical history or a phone number where we can call his parents? ... Alright then... Thank you." The nurse hung up the phone and motioned Lucky and Liz over.

"Your grandmother is going to call Pat's parents right now. She should be down in a few minutes with hopefully some information."

Liz's eyes began to well up with tears again. Her body began to shake with fear.

"Its all my fault Lucky! If I had only remembered!" She pressed her back against the wall and slid slowly to the floor. She put her head in her hands. "I just begin to find out about my history and now... my only friend it seems is sick and I know nothing about it!" She began to sob harder, as she began to rock herself back and forth.

Lucky slides down beside Liz and puts his arm around her shoulders to draw her into his embrace. "Liz... its ok. Its not your fault. Don't cry things will be ok."

"You don't understand Lucky! I *know* I couldn't have saved him. I *know* he told me what is wrong. I *know* its something worse than what all these doctors and nurses think it is. I may not remember it," she pointed to her head, "but I know in my heart that he's not going to make it out of Port Charles ever again." she held her hands over her heart and looked into Lucky's eyes. "Lucky... I know Pat is going to die, I may never have a chance to look my oldest friend in the eyes and say goodbye. Its... its like no one understands!" she threw her head foreward into Lucky's shoulder and sobbed. It felt good to have someone just hold her. Even though she knew it wouldn't be alright, she needed someone to be there with her at that place at that time.

"Liz, I do understand what you are feeling. I wish I could take your pain away. All I can do is sit with you and talk to you and hope it helps." Lucky says. Lucky holds Liz in his arms while she cries.

***

Samantha Walsh got off the bus and walked into Kelly's. Port Charles was different from London. This is where the papers in her mother's desk said that her birth parents lived.

Samantha sat down at a table and ordered.

***

"Maxie, let's go to Kelly's. I'll get Tammy to make you some nice warm tea, and hopefully it will help calm your nerves." Lucas said to her.

"Thanks, Lucas."

As they approached Kelly's, Lucas noticed that there was actually a customer within. "That's strange, there's never anyone in Kelly's at this hour."

The bell over the door jingled, Maxie and Lucas entered the diner.

The lone customer in Kelly’s looked over at Maxie and Lucas as they came in.

Samantha watched the two teens enter the cafe. They looked as though they were having a lot of fun, something she hadn't some for a long time. "I wonder if I'll ever get to know them?" she thought to herself then a thought formed itself in the back of her mind. "They could even end up being my brother or sister."

Maxie and Lucas walked to the counter and ordered something. Samantha sipped her drink. "I'll wait for them to talk to me," she said to herself with a soft English accent.

Lucas pulled the still recovering Maxie behind him, almost as though he was trying to make up for not protecting her from Drew. "Hi," he said slowly to the strange woman that sat in Kelly's. "You're new here aren't you? I can pretty much tell that, 'cause not many people come to my mom's diner at this time of the night... So where ya from?"

***

Laura decides that she can't just go home. She needs to go to the hospital and she if she can do anything for anyone. Maybe just hand-holding is all they may want but at least it is something.

She pulls up to the emergengy entrance and sees Mac being taken in to the elevator headed for the OR and she knew she arrived just in time. She sees Liz and Lucky on the floor and walks up to them to see what is wrong."Lucky, is Liz ok?"

"Mom, she is so scared that something is going to happen to Pat because she couldn't remember what is wrong with him. They had to get Audrey to call his parents because he may have some medical condition."

"I'm sure everything will be fine. Let me go see what I can find out."

Just then Audrey walks downstairs and Laura walks up to her and tells her Liz is real worried about Pat.

***

Robert paced back and forth through the emergency waiting area. Every now and then, he noticed Jax looking up at him with a strange sort of recognition in his eyes. After a few strange looks like those, Robert sat down in the chair across from Jax.

"What's the story?" Robert wanted to know.

Jax ran his fingers through his hair thoughtlessly. "Huh?"

"You kept looking up at me like you wanted to say something, then didn't."

"Sorry...I guess it's just something that's been bugging me ever since I met you on the docks the other day. I can't seem to place where I'd seen you before."

"You're John and Lady Jane's youngest?" Robert said trying to remember.

Jax was incredulous. "Yeah! How'd you know that?"

"It's just that I haven't seen you since you weren't much more than a toddler. Your mum and da were still living in Australia back then."

"So you know my parents?"

"I should say I do. Your mum's my older sister."

***

Audrey goes over to Liz and Lucky and tries to convince them that they are checking him out carefully. “There is still no information on Pat.”

"I know." she sighed. She understood that Lucky was trying to help her.

"Elizabeth?" Liz looked up and saw Audrey standing before her.

"Grams?"

"Pat's parents called, he has cancer, Elizabeth. He came to Port Charles to see you before... you... know..." Audrey's voice trailed off.

Lucky just holds Liz as Audrey tells Liz about Pat. "Elizabeth, are you ok?" Lucky asks after Audrey broke the news to Liz.

Liz sniffed and looked him in the eyes, "Yeah, Lucky. I think I'll be alright. I just wish I could talk to him... you know... before...." her voice trailed off.

"I know you do Liz. Think positively and you will get to talk to Pat." Lucky says looking her straight in the eyes.

"Hang on, Elizabeth. I need to make a phone call." Audrey went to the Triage desk and dialed her home number. The phone coninued to ring until the answering machine picked up.

Elizabeth's bubbly recorded message said, "Hi you've reached the Hardy-Weber residence. We're not home at the moment so leave your name and number. Thanks!" The message was followed by a long beep.

"Sarah, its Grams. There was a problem at the hospital, one of Elizabeth's friends was found unconcious. We're both here in the emergency room. If you can get down here that'd be great. If not we'll see you when we come home. Oh! Don't forget to lock the door. I left it opened for you to get in. See you soon."

***

Brenda slowly opened her eyes and tied to look around, but all she saw was pitch black, and a lot of empty space. She was laying face down on the floor of a moving van, with duct tape around her mouth, and both her hands and feet tied tight in strong rope. She struggled to get loose but it was no use. Brenda couldn't believe this was happening. She wanted to go home. Why had someone kidnapped her for? And what did the man mean when he said "Miss Scott"? who is that? she wondered.

The truck stopped. "Jimmy get the b*t*h from the back and bring her round."

Brenda's thoughts were interrupted as the van stooped and she heard her abductors move around the side of the van and open the back doors. She could feel the cold air against her exposed skin. She had forgotten she only had her flimsy dress on. She tried to see their faces, but one of them tied a blindfold tightly over her eyes, as they dragged her out of the van, and into what she didn't know was a warehouse.

He watched as their hostage stumbled, blinded by the handkerchief they had wrapped around her eyes.

He laughed to himself. 'Good. She deserves this after what she did to us,' he thought. He went up behind the girl and pulled her long black hair, pulled her ear to his mouth. "This is what you get, Hannah Scott. This is what you and your FBI friends are gonna halfta worry about. You should be lucky that you're alive!" he laughed menacingly. "In!" he pushed her into the warehouse. He laughed as she mumbled something beneath the duct tape on her mouth. "Not until we're inside."

***

Jax was dumbstruck. It had never occured to him that he didn't know his mother's maiden name.

All he knew about his mother's side of the family was that there had been some sort of falling out when he was little. There hadn't been much contact over the years since then...until he had come to Port Charles. Now he knew why his parents hadn't really liked the idea of him staying once they found out Mac was in town. It was never about that whole thing with Miranda.

Jax looked down at his hands then looked up at Robert. "So...you're my uncle and so is Mac?!?!"

"That's right. Never knew you had so much family, eh?" Robert said with a smile.

"What was the falling out over?"

"Mac really...You see, he had just gotten his pilot's license when he took Mum, Da and myself up for a joyride. We crashed. Mum and Da and my fiancee were killed and I was hurt pretty badly. Mac was too, but not as much physically as emotionally. It took me a long time to forgive him. We were apart twelve years. Your Mum blamed Mac too...but she blamed me more, because in her opinion I should have known he wasn't ready to fly out over the Outback." Robert's eyes misted up. "I never blamed myself...only Mac...for a long time. When I put it behind me, I tried to talk to your Mum, but she didn't want to have anything to do with us anymore. So we closed the book, so to speak."

Jax smiled. "Wow! I have uncles!"

Robert tried to smile. "I thought you knew and that's why you were so concerned for Mac."

"No...we've been friends since we got past the misunderstanding of my first wife, Miranda."

"How'd you do that? From what Mac told me, once we were on speaking terms again, she was dead and it was his fault."

"No...first, it was my father's fault and second, she wasn't dead. She came back a few years ago. We decided it was a mistake to try to get back together."

Robert nodded, "I see. So...now, you've found Chloe." He looked over at the pretty blond standing with Ana and Felicia. "She's very caring."

"I know. I'm not going to let this one go...if I can just get my wife to give me a divorce."

Robert looked at his nephew strangely. "Huh?"

"It's a very long story. How about some coffee?" Jax asked.

"Sounds great. I'm buying," Robert offered.

***

Jason watched Sonny as he paced back and forth in the penthouse, trying to figure out who had taken Brenda.

Sonny was almost ready to break.

Jason knew it. "Sonny, have a drink..calm down, we'll find her."

Sonny refused the drink.

Jason sighed, "Listen, you're tired go upstairs and lie down..ok?"

Sonny looked at Jason, "All I am gunna do up there, if talk with Benny on the phone, about Brenda's whereabouts." Sonny started to go toward the kitchen, then decided to tell Jason something else. "Let me know if Johnny finds anything," Sonny told Jason. Just then there was a knock on the door, and Sonny stopped in his tracks, waiting to see who it was.

Jason opened the door and Carly came barging in. Sonny saw it was Carly, and began to retreat inside, again. "Jason, don't ever tell me what to do again!" she yelled at him, as Jason stared at her.

***

Chloe and Ana did everything they could to try and lift Felicia's spirits. Felicia just seemed to be in terrible shock, crying so much every moment.

"Felicia," Chloe began to say, "Mac is going to be okay. He is going to pull through, I know he will. The doctors are fighting hard, but Mac is fighting even harder to come back to you. You are a strong person and Mac needs you to be strong right now. You both need to have faith in each other. Then you'll both pull through this."

Felicia looked up from her tears. "I know he is. When he was shot over Christmas I held on but I don't know how much longer his heart can hold on I mean, he barely recovered from the last time." she said her tears filling her eyes.

Anna looked at her best friend. "In all the years I've known Mac he's never given up. He'll fight Felicia but only if you do. You have to be strong and not give up," she said.

***

Ned and Alexis are sitting on the couch, her head on his chest, his arm around her waist. They sat in compaionable silence, both thinking about what has happened.

Alexis whispered softly, "I wonder how Felicia's holding up..."

Ned responded just as softly, "She must be terrified of losing Mac...."

Suddenly, looking up with tears in her eyes, Alexis confessed, "I don't what I'd do if that ever happened to you..." Her voice trailed off, unsure of how he will react.

Ned looked into Alexis’ eyes and told her softly, "You're never going to have to find out." He leans in and reassures her by gently kissing her, but it quickly escalates.

Her previous thoughts forgotten, Alexis suggests, "Wouldn't the bedroom be a more appropriate locale for this?"

Ned justs nods, picks her up, and carries her into the bedroom, where they both get lost in each other....

***

Liz and Lucky had been waiting at the hospital all night to hear about Pat’s condition.

They finally heard that he had been moved to a private room.

"Lucky... Help me sneak into Pat's room. Please?"

"Ok, Liz. I will help you." Lucky says.

"Thanks, Lucky. This means a lot to me."

He pulled her to her feet as Liz brushed away all of the lingering tears from her eyes. "So, what do we do first?"

Laura was glad that she was at the hospital when Liz got the news that Pat had been moved to a private room. ‘It’s a shame that a kid that young has to have cancer.’

"Mom, they won't let Liz in to see Pat,” Lucky told his mother. “Can you help me help Liz into his room."

"Of course, I will help. Let Audrey and Liz spend a little time together while I check out the hallway. I will let you know when it is clear enough for Liz to go in there. I know the feeling when your friend is so sick and you just want to be with them for a little while."

"Thanks, Mom. You are the greatest," Lucky said with a smile.

"My mom's checking out the hallway to see when it is safest to get you in. Why don't you talk with Audrey for a little while. I'll be right here if you need me." Lucky told Liz.

"Okay. Sounds like a plan. Call me when the coast is clear, 'kay?" she walked over to Audrey and began to ask her some questions as she watched Lucky and Laura out of the corner of her eye.

Laura walks up to Dr. Jones as he walks out of Pat's room. "Tony, how is Pat doing. Liz is in quite a state out there and I want to tell her something to ease her mind."

"Tell her that he is resting comfortably for now and that she can see him in the morning if things don't change."

"Thank you. I am sure she will be glad to hear that. Maybe I can talk her into going home to get some sleep."

"After what she has been through, that is the best thing for her. I'll check on him in a couple of more hours." Tony says as he walked away.

"Lucky, go get Liz. Tony won't be back for a couple of hours."

Audrey apologizes for not being able to stay down longer and Lucky tells her that he is going to take her home to get some sleep.

"Com'on, Liz. You can go and see Pat for a little while. Then mom and I are taking you home to get some rest."
