Christianity is much too often called a religion, when in fact it is a relationship. Let me explain:
People who claim to be "religious" often depend upon their good deeds (Church attendance, Bible reading, tithing, etc.) to get them into Heaven. There is one simple and serious problem with that: No matter how many good deeds we perform, we will never become perfect! We can never have fellowship with God on our own terms because He is perfect.
That naturally begs the question: "How then can anyone at all have fellowship with God if He requires perfection?" The Answer is JESUS CHRIST.
Jesus Christ is God's only begotten Son (which means He is God Himself in human form). He was born without original sin (via immaculate conception), so he was perfect. Since He was both God and man, He alone could bridge the gap between the two. That He did!
He was crucified at the hands of sinful man for treason, which he did not commit! It was sin that crucified the sinless Son of God. Outwardly it was the one of the most cruel miscarriages of justice in world history.
Little did anybody know that His crucifixion was all a part of God's master plan to reconcile sinners to Himself. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for your sins; He died in your place. It is Jesus Christ who can declare you legally perfect in God's eyes.
But that is not all. He rose again from the grave to prove that He is the Son of God and the Savior of man. He ascended back to Heaven without dying again. (How can He give eternal life if He Himself does not have it?)
That leaves us with some very significant questions: Do you have eternal life? Where will you spend eternity if you died right now? Does Jesus Christ know you as one of His servants? If you are stumped for an answer, then you need help from God's Word (the Bible).
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16 NASB, emphasis added).
And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household" (Acts 16:31 emphasis likewise).
That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. (Romans 10:9-10).
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
You need to "call upon the name of the Lord" (Romans 10:13) so that you will be saved! If you are not sure what to say to God right now, then just tell Him how you're feeling, and ask Him to give you the words to say. He has said, "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3).
If you have just received Jesus Christ as your Savior right now, I would love to hear from you. You can e-mail me and give me your testimony. If you are still not certain about the gospel of Jesus Christ, I will do my best to answer any questions you might have. I will pray for you too.
