There was an emphasis on the new this evening - the newly renovated and refurnished Annandale Hotel once again showcasing some of the finer local talents, this evening in the form of Sydney bands Swirl and Atticus.
Sadly arriving too late to witness The Brothers Murphy, the first taste of the night was sydney popsters Atticus, pulling a tiny crowd for such a sorely underrated outfit. Previewing new material off their forthcoming release, Atticus provided their own style of poprock, even indulging in moments of pure heavy rock. The new material was promising but the highlights of their set were old favourites like "Teacup Overflow" and "Lend Me An Ear."
Swirl took to the stage with a single candle backdrop and a handful of music that is sadly lacking in the scene today. Guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Keira Hodgkinson has a voice like honey but it was her harmonies with guitarist Ben Aylward that stood out this evening.
Despite some technical sound problems and consistent feedback, Swirl delivered a tight and energetic set. For a band with essentially quiet, sparse music, their live show is an intense experience, creating a solid wall of dreamy pop sounds. They mostly previewed tracks from their forthcoming album including the latest single Gypsy Eyes.
Swirl left in a scream of feedback only surpassed by Sonic Youth, unceremoniously departing the stage without an encore. They ended their set with the Last Unicorn and a manically powerful version of Taylor's Eye, a lasting impression that will no doubt remain with us until Swirl's return to the live scene again.
