2. THE SONG OF CHRIST’S GLORY Phil 2:6-11    © LCPD

Ant:          Jesus Christ is the Lord to  the glory of the Father!
Christ Jesus was in the form of God,
But he did not cling to equality with God. Ant.

But taking the form of a servant, he emptied himself,
And was born in our human likeness. Ant.

Being found in human form, he humbled himself,
And became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Ant.

Therefore God has highly exalted him,
And bestowed on him the name above every name;       Ant.

that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue  proclaim:   Ant.

Give praise to the Father Almighty, to his Son Jesus Christ the Lord,
To the Spirit who dwells in our hearts, for ages unending.  Amen!      Ant.

 3.                    SONG OF THE LETTER TO THE COLOSSIANS Col 1:12-20  © LCPD

Ant.          Glory to you, O Lord, the first-born from the dead!
Let us give thanks to the Father,
Who has qualified us to share *
In the inheritance of the saints in light.

He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness,
And transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, *
In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the unseen God, *
The first-born of all creation,
For in him all things were created, *
In heaven and on earth, seen and unseen.

            All things were created  *
through him and for him.
He is before all things, *
And in him all things hold together.

He is the head of the body, the Church
He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, *
That in everything he might be pre-eminent.

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, *
And through him to reconcile to himself all things.

God has united heaven and earth in him, *
Making peace by the blood of his Cross.

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, so now and forever, *
World without end.  Amen.

The wonder of his love.

PSALM  1

Happy indeed is the man
who follows not the counsel of the wicked;
nor lingers in the way of sinners
nor sits in the company of scorners,
but whose delight is the law of the Lord
and who ponders his law day and night.

He is like a tree that is planted
beside the flowing waters,
that yields its fruit in due season
and whose leaves shall never fade;
and all that he does shall prosper.
Not so are the wicked, not so!

For they like winnowed chaff
shall be driven away by the wind.
When the wicked are judged they shall not stand,
nor find room among those who are just;
for the Lord guards the way of the just
but the way of the wicked leads to doom.

PSALM 8

Ant::         How great is your name O' Lord, through all the earth, Alleluia, Alleluia

How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth!

Your majesty is praised above the heavens;
on the lips of children and of babes
you have found praise to foil your enemy,
to silence the foe and the rebel.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and the stars which you arranged,
what is man that you should keep him in  mind,
mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god;
with glory and honour you crowned him,
gave him power over the works of your hand,
put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle,
yes, even the savage beasts,
birds of the air, and fish
that make their way through the waters.

How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth!

Give  praise to the Father almighty,
To His Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord,
To the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,
Both now and for ever.

Psalm-prayer

Almighty Lord, how wonderful is your name.  You have made every creature subject to you; make us worthy to give you service.

PSALM 22 (23)

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord's own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever.

To the Father and Son give glory,
give glory to the Spirit.
To God who is, who was, and who will be
for ever and ever.

Psalm-prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of your Church, you give us new birth in the waters of baptism, you anoint us with saving oil, and you call us to salvation at your table.  Dispel the terrors of death and the darkness of error.   Lead your people along safe paths that they may rest securely in you and live forever in your Father’s house.

PSALM 44 (45) a  (:2-10)

My heart overflows with noble words. +
To the king I must speak the song I have made, *
my tongue as nimble as the pen of a scribe.

You are the fairest of the children of men +
and graciousness is poured upon your lips: *
because God has blessed you for evermore.

O mighty one, gird your sword upon your thigh; +
in splendour and state, ride on in triumph *
for the cause of truth and goodness and right.

Take aim with your bow in your dread right hand. +
Your arrows are sharp: peoples fall beneath you. *
The foes of the king fall down and lose heart.

Your throne, O God, shall endure for ever. +
A sceptre of justice is the sceptre of your kingdom. *
Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you  +
with the oil of gladness above other kings: *
your robes are fragrant with aloes and myrrh.

From the ivory palace you are greeted with music. +
The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. *
On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

PSALM 50 (51)

Ant:          Have mercy, Lord, I have sinned against you.
                Wash me whiter than snow.

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness.
In your compassion blot out my offence.
O wash me more and more from my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.

My offences truly I know them;
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone have I sinned;
what is evil in your sight I have done.

That you may be justified when you give sentence
and be without reproach when you judge,
O see, in guilt I was born,
a sinner was I conceived.

Indeed you love truth in the heart;
then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom.
O purify me, then I shall be clean;
O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me hear rejoicing and gladness,
that the bones you have crushed may revive.
From my sins turn away your face
and blot out all my guilt.

A pure heart create for me, O God,
put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

Ant:

Give me again the joy of your help;
with a spirit of fervour sustain me,
that I may teach transgressors your ways
and sinners may return to you.

O rescue me, God my helper,
and my tongue shall ring out your goodness.
O Lord, open my lips
and my mouth shall declare your praise.

For in sacrifice you take no delight,
burnt offering from me you would refuse,
my sacrifice a contrite spirit.
A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn.

In your goodness, show  favour to Sion:
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice,
holocausts offered on your altar.

Psalm-prayer

Father, he who knew no sin was made sin for us, to save us and restore us to your friendship.  Look upon our contrite heart and afflicted spirit and heal our troubled conscience, so that in the joy and strength of the Holy Spirit we may proclaim your praise and glory before all the nations.

PSALM 62 (63)

O God, you are my God, for you I long;
for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you
like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life,
in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,
my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed I remember you.
On you I muse through the night
for you have been my help;
in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand holds me fast.

Psalm-prayer

Living God, creator of light, grant light to those who call upon you.  Open our lips to praise you, our lives to proclaim your love, our work to give you honour and our voices to celebrate you forever.

PSALM 66  (67)

Ant.: To you, God, be the praise of the peoples,
be the praise of the peoples altogether.

O God, be gracious and bless us
and let your face shed its light upon us.
So will your ways be known upon earth
and all nations learn your saving help.

Ant.

Let the nations be glad and exult
for you rule the world with justice.
With fairness you rule the peoples,
you guide the nations on earth.

Ant.

The earth has yielded its fruit
for God, our God has blessed us.
May God still give us his blessing
till the ends of the earth revere him.

Ant.

Psalm-prayer

Be gracious and bless us, Lord, and let your  face shed its light on us, so that we can make you known with reverence and bring forth a harvest of justice.

PSALM 70 (71)

Ant:          O radiant light that’s born from light,                          © LCPD
Yes, the Lord to us has appeared,
And all his glory lights up the whole world,
                Alleluia, alleluia!
 ~ I ~
In you, O Lord, I take refuge; *
Let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me, free me: *
Pay heed to me and save me.

Be a rock where I can take refuge, *
A mighty stronghold to save me;
For you are my rock, my stronghold. +
Free me from the hand of the wicked, *
From the grip of the unjust, of the oppressor.

It is you, Lord, who are my hope, *
My trust, O Lord, since my youth.
On you I  have leaned from my birth, +
From my  mother’s womb you have been my help. *
My hope has always been in you.

My fate has filled many with awe *
But you are my strong refuge.
My lips are filled with your praise, *
With your glory all the day long.
Do not reject me now that I am old; *
When my strength fails do not forsake me.

For my enemies are speaking about me; *
Those who watch me take counsel together.
They say: “God had forsaken him; follow him, *
Seize him; there is no one to save him.”
O God, do not stay far off: *
My God, make haste to help me!

Let them be put to shame and destroyed, *
All those who seek my life.
Let them be covered with shame and confusion, *
All those who seek to harm me.

Praise the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, *
Both now and forever.  Amen.

Ant.
 ~ II ~
But as for me, I will always hope *
and praise you more and more.
My lips will tell of your justice +
and day by day of your help *
Though I can never tell it all.

I will declare the Lord’s mighty deeds *
Proclaiming your justice, yours alone.
O God, you have taught me from my youth *
And I proclaim your wonders still.

Now that I am old and grey-headed, *
Do not forsake me, God.
Let me tell of your power to all ages, *
Praise your strength and justice to the skies,
Tell of you who have worked such wonders. *
O God, who is like you?

You have burdened me with bitter troubles *
But you will give me back my life.
You will raise me from the depths of the earth; *
You will exalt me and console me again.

So I will give you thanks on the lyre *
For your faithful love, my God.
To you will I sing with the harp, *
To you, the Holy One of Israel.

When I sing to you my lips shall rejoice *
And my soul, which you have redeemed.
And all the day long my tongue *
Shall tell the tale of your justice:
For they are put to shame and disgraced, *
All those who seek to harm me.

Praise the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, *
Both now and forever.  Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Lord, God of the living, you give us lasting youth through the waters of rebirth, and happiness through the bread of life.  Do not desert us when we are old but help us to follow your will in both good times and bad, so that we may for ever praise your faithfulness.

PSALM 90 (91)

Ant:          My refuge, my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
and abides in the shade of the Almighty
says to the Lord: 'My refuge,
my stronghold,  my God in whom I trust!'

It is he who will free you from the snare
of the fowler who seeks to destroy you;
he will conceal you with his pinions
and under his wings you will find refuge.

You will not fear the terror of the night
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the plague that prowls in the darkness
nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand fall at your right,
you, it will never approach;
his faithfulness is buckler and shield.

Your eyes have only to look
to see how the wicked are repaid,
you who have said: 'Lord, my refuge!'
and have made the Most High your dwelling.

Upon you no evil shall fall,
no plague approach where you dwell.
For you has he commanded his angels,
to keep you in all your ways.

They shall bear you upon their hands
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
On the lion and the viper you will tread
and trample the young lion and the dragon.

Since he clings to me in love, I will free him;
protect him,  for he knows my name.
When he calls, I shall answer: 'I am with you.'
I will save him in distress and give him glory.

With length of life I will content him;
I shall let him see my saving power.

Ant.

PSALM 92 (93)

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed; +
the Lord has robed himself with might,
he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved; +
your throne has stood firm from of old;
from all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The waters have lifted up, O Lord, +
the waters have lifted up their voice,
the waters have lifted up their thunder.

Greater than the roar of mighty waters, +
more glorious than the surgings of the sea,
the Lord is glorious on high.

Truly, your decrees are to be trusted. +
Holiness is fitting to your house,
O Lord, until the end of time.

Give glory to the Father Almighty, +
to his Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord,
to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts.

Psalm-prayer

All power and all authority in heaven and on earth have been given to you, Lord Jesus; you rule with decrees that are firm and trustworthy.  Be with us always so that we may make disciples whose holiness will be worthy of your house.

PSALM 95 (96)

Ant:          O sing unto the Lord a song that is new,
And proclaim day after day the good news of his saving love.
O sing a new song to the Lord, +
sing to the Lord all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name.

Proclaim his help day by day, +
tell among the nations his glory
and his wonders among all the peoples.

The Lord is great and worthy of praise, +
to be feared above all gods;
the gods of the heathen are naught.

It was the Lord who made the heavens, +
his are majesty and state and power
and splendour in his holy place.

Ant:
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, +give the Lord glory and power, give the Lord the glory of his name.Bring an offering and enter his courts, +worship the Lord in his temple.
O earth, tremble before him.
Proclaim to the nations:  'God is king.' +
The world he made firm in its place;
he will judge the peoples in fairness.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad, *
let the sea and all within it thunder praise,
let the land and all it bears rejoice, *
all the trees of the wood shout for joy

at the presence of the Lord for he comes, *
he comes to rule the earth.
With justice he will rule the world,  *
he will judge the peoples with his truth.

Psalm-prayer

Lord, you have renewed the face of the earth.  Your Church throughout the world sings you a new song, announcing your wonders to all.  Through a virgin, you have brought forth a new birth in our world; through your miracles, a new power; through your suffering, a new patience; in your resurrection, a new hope, and in your ascension, new majesty.

PSALM 97 (98)

Ant:          O sing to the Lord, for his power has done wonders,
                Alleluia, alleluia!

Sing a new song to the Lordfor he has worked wonders.
His right hand and his holy arm
have brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation;
he has shown his justice to the nations.
He has remembered his truth and love
for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth,
ring out your joy.

Ant:

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp
 with the sound of music.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the sea and all within it thunder;
the world, and all its peoples.
Let the rivers clap their hands
and the hills ring out their joy.

Rejoice at the presence of the Lord,
for he comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with fairness.

Psalm-prayer

Lord Jesus, you have revealed your justice to all nations.  We stood condemned, and you came to be judged in our place.  Send your saving power on us and, when you come in glory, bring your mercy to those for whom you were condemned.

PSALM 99 (100)

Ant:          Arise, come to your God, sing him your songs of rejoicing.

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God.
He made us, we belong to him,
we are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his courts with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Give glory to the Father Almighty,
to his Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord,
to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts.

Psalm-prayer

God, devoted to us as a Father, you created us as a sign of your power and elected us your people to show your goodness.  Accept the thanks your children offer that we may all enter your courts praising you in song.

PSALM 103 (104)

Blessed are You, O Lord my God,
O blest are You, O Lord.

Clothed in might and in splendour and majesty,
you are wrapt in light as with a garment.

Blessed are You…

You set forth the earth on its foundations,
not to be shaken, through all ages for ever.

Blessed are You…

Your hand covered the earth with the garment of the sea
and waters spread over the mountains.

Blessed are You…

O come, bless the Lord, O my Spirit,
O Lord my God, how great you are.

Blessed are You…

O how many your works, O Lord God,
and in Your wisdom you have made them, made them all,
You have made them in your wisdom.

O how many your works, O Lord God.

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever,
may the Lord rejoice, rejoice in His works.

Praise to You, praise to You,
praise to You, O Lord, the creator of all the universe.

Praise the Father, and the Son, and the Spirit of God,
as it was and is now and shall be, world without end. Amen.

Praise to You, praise to You….

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Glory to You, O God.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Glory to You, O God.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Glory to You, O God.
Our hope are You, Lord,
praise to You!

PSALM 120 (121)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains:
from where shall come my help?
My help shall come from the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

May he never allow you to stumble!
Let him sleep not, your guard.
No, he sleeps not nor slumbers,
Israel's guard.

The Lord is your guard and your shade;
at your right hand he stands.
By day the sun shall not smite you
nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from evil,
he will guard your soul.
The Lord will guard your going and coming
both now and for ever.

PSALM 121 (122)

I rejoiced when I heard them say:
'Let us go to God's house.'
And now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city
one united whole.
It is there that the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord.

For Israel's law it is,
there to praise the Lord's name.
There were set the thrones of judgement
of the house of David.

For the peace of Jerusalem pray:
'Peace be to your homes!
May peace reign in your walls,
in your palaces, peace!'

For love of my brethren and friends
I say: 'Peace upon you!'
For love of the house of the Lord
I will ask for your good.

Psalm-prayer

When you rose from the dead, Lord Jesus,  you formed the Church into your new body and made of it the new Jerusalem, united in your Spirit.  Give us peace in our day.  Make all nations come to your Church to share your gifts in fellowship, that they  may render you thanks without end and come to your eternal city.

PSALM 130 (131)

Ant:          Just like a little child in the arms of its mother,
I have kept close to you, Lord, in silence and peace.

O Lord, my heart is not proud
nor haughty my eyes. *
I have not gone after things too great
nor marvels beyond me.

Truly I have set my soul in silence and peace. +
As a child has rest in its mother's arms, *
even so my soul.

O Israel, hope in the Lord *
both now and for ever.

Praise the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Both now and forever.  Amen.

Psalm-prayer

Lord Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, you declared that whoever receives a little child in your name receives you, and you promised your kingdom to those who are like children.  Never let pride reign in our hearts, but may the Father’s compassion reward and embrace all who willingly bear your gentle yoke.

PSALM 133 (134)

Ant::         O' Praise our God,
all you His servants,
and all who revere Him,
both great and small.

O come, bless the Lord,
all you who serve the Lord,
who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.             Ant

Lift up your hands to the holy place
and bless the Lord throughout the night.
May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made both heaven and earth.            Ant

To the Father and Son give glory,
give glory to the Spirit.
To God who is, who was, and who will be
for ever and ever. Amen.                             Ant

PSALM 136 (137)

Ant::         Jerusalem, Jerusalem!
Let God wipe away every teardrop from our eyes.

By the rivers of Babylon†
there we sat and wept,
remembering Zion; *
on the poplars that grew there
we hung up our harps.

For it was there that they asked us, †
our captors, for songs,
our oppressors, for joy. *
'Sing to us,' they said,
'one of Zion's songs.'

O how could we sing †
the song of the Lord
on alien soil? *
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
let my right hand wither!

O let my tongue †
cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, *
if I prize not Jerusalem
above all my joys!

Psalm-prayer

Lord, remember your pilgrim Church.  We sit weeping at the streams of Babylon.  Do not let us be drawn into the current of the passing world, but free us from every evil and raise our thoughts to the heavenly Jerusalem.

PSALM 138 (139)

~ I ~
O Lord, you search me and you know me,
you know my resting and my rising,
you discern my purpose from afar.
You mark when I walk or lie down,
all my ways lie open to you.

Before ever a word is on my tongue
you know it, O Lord, through and through.
Behind and before you besiege me,
your hand ever laid upon me.
Too wonderful for me, this knowledge,
too high, beyond my reach.

O where can I go from your spirit,
or where can I flee from your face?
If I climb the heavens, you are there.
If I lie in the grave, you are there.

If I take the wings of the dawn
and dwell at the sea's furthest end,
even there your hand would lead me,
your right hand would hold me fast.

If I say: 'Let the darkness hide me
and the light around me be night,'
even darkness is not dark for you
and the night is as clear as the day.
~ II ~
For it was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother's womb.
I thank you for the wonder of my being,
for the wonders of all your creation.

Already you knew my soul,
my body held no secret from you
when I was being fashioned in secret
and moulded in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw all my actions,
they were all of them written in your book;
every one of my days was decreed
before one of them came into being.

To me, how mysterious your thoughts,
the sum of them not to be numbered!
If I count them, they are more than the sand;
to finish, I must be eternal, like you.

O search me, God, and know my heart.
O test me and know my thoughts.
See that I follow not the wrong path
and lead me in the path of life eternal.

Psalm-prayer

You watch over heaven and earth, Lord Jesus.  Your death brought light to the dead; your resurrection gave joy to the saints; your ascension made the angels rejoice.  Your power exceeds all power.  Lead us to life eternal, and watch over us with your love.  May your friends be filled with honour and join you in heaven.

PSALM 148

Ant:          Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Praise the Lord  from heaven above,
praise him mightily in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels too,
praise him endlessly, all you his host!

Praise him, O sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heav'ns above
and the waters above the heav'ns!

Let them praise the Name of the Lord.
He commanded: and they were made.
And the majesty of his Name
reaches further than heaven and earth.

He exalts the strength of his people.
He, the praise of all of his saints,
of the house of Israel,
of the people to whom he comes close.

Give all praise to the Father on high,
To his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
To the Spirit who dwells in us,
Both for now and for ever. Amen!

PSALM 150

Praise God in his holy place,
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his powerful deeds,
O praise his surpassing greatness.

O praise him with the sound of trumpet,
praise him with lute and with harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipes.

O praise him with resounding cymbals,
praise him with clashing of cymbals.
Let everything that lives and breathes
give praise to the Lord.             Alleluia!

Give praise to the Father Almighty,
to his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,
to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,
both now and evermore.        Alleluia!

Psalm-prayer

Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and of all created things, you  make your just ones holy and you justify sinners who confess your name.  Hear us as we humbly pray to you: give us eternal joy with your saints.

He has visited his people and redeemed them.

He has raised up for us a mighty saviour
in the house of David his servant,
as he promised by the lips of holy ones,
those who were his prophets from of old.

A saviour who would free us from our foes,
from the hands of all who hate us.
So his love for our fathers is fulfilled
and his holy covenant remembered.

He swore to Abraham our father to grant us, +
that free from fear,  and saved from the hands of our foes,
we might serve him in holiness and justice
all the days of our life in his presence.

As for you, little child, +
you shall be called a prophet of God, the Most High.
You shall go ahead of the Lord †
to prepare his ways before him,

To make known to his people their salvation
through forgiveness of all their sins,
the loving-kindness of the heart of our God
who visits us like the dawn from on high.

He will give light to those in darkness +,
those who dwell in the shadow of death,
and guide us into the way of peace.

Praise the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit,
world without end.  Amen.
