Genre(s) - Beat up action
Platform(s) - Arcade and Super Famicom
Anyone who has played games during the 1980's and 1990's must have played "Final Fight" before. For those who have never played this before, "Final Fight", a creation of Capcom, was one of the first games of its kind. Released in 1989, it had various versions released later on, though they're one of the reasons why I can't give this game a higher score. I'll get more into that later on.
Mike Haggar, a former professional wrestler, is the mayor of Metro City, a highly corrupt city. Obviously, this really is supposed to be Los Angeles and if you don't believe me, the game's map gives you a clue on what state this game takes place in. Anyway, Jessica, his daughter, gets kidnapped by a gang named Mad Gear and now, he has to rescue her. Along the way, there's Cody, the brawler who happens to be Jessica's boyfriend and Gai, a ninja who happens to be friends with the gang. I know that "Gai" should be spelled "Guy", but it feels weird to have it spelled as "Guy" if it is pronounced "gah-ee" and adding on, "Gai" is a standard Japanese name. So, from now on, for every game he is in, I will spell it as "Gai".
So, when you begin your quest to rescue Jessica, pick your character first. Haggar's the powerful one, Gai's the fast one and Cody is in the middle. Beat every thug you see and go from there.
Fun - 6
You know the drill. Beat every thug you see and collect weapons as well as food if you are in need of health. Although this task became like second nature to me and it still is as I have fun with it, I can't give out a high score because of the amount of edits the non-Japanese Super Famicom port did. One example is the subtraction of parts of a level. Also, there were some irritating part like weapons not doing enough damage (except for the knife) and Sodom (whose edited name I will not say).
Life - 6
Unless you are able to stomach the edits, you might as well stick with the arcade version. The game has its moments of joy, but other than that, what else can I say? The edits really do kill the non-Japanese Super Famicom port.
Audio - 8
Personally, I like the music. The first level's song, which is later used in other levels, is very upbeat and the subway's song seemed a bit mellow. The sound effects are not that good, but they're just there.
Art - 9
If you take away the edits, you have a game that looked pretty good for its time. Gai could have looked a bit better, but oh well. At least items like the food, trains and buildings look good.
Control - 10
Jump, attack, special attack by pressing both buttons at the same time, any questions?
Story - N/A
Girl gets kidnapped. Father, boyfriend and friend chase after kidnappers. Girl, father, boyfriend and friend unite. We've seen this type of story before, but we don't play these for story now, don't we?
Overall - 7
If those edits had not appeared, this would have easily received a higher score from me. Well, just play the arcade version and be happy. That's all.
+
This is one of the first beat up games and a decent one too.

Can I beat up the edits as well while I'm at it?
