Here's a survey where various questions are asked and I answer them. Some are silly and some are serious. It's pretty entertaining.
1. Which M&M pieces do you save for last?
Blue and green since blue is my childhood color and green is the color of dollars.
2. How religious are you?
I'm pretty religious, but I'm not that extreme with religion, unlike many Catholics or anyone else out there for that matter. After all, I am a "Final Fantasy" and "Slayers" fan.
3. Before you became an anime and manga fan, what cartoons and comics as well as non-Asian games were you into?
"Ninja Turtles", "Garfield", "Archie", "Looney Toones", "Jetsons", "Flinstones", "Denver the Last Dinosaur" (don't know if anyone remembers this still), "Calvin and Hobbes", "Beatle Bailey" (another series I am not sure if people remembers), "Peanuts" (I am still surprised about Mr. Schultz's death), "Jump Start", "Cathy", "Toejam and Earl", the "Strike" series, those super heroes ones (i.e. "X-Men" and "Batman") and so forth. Now, I'm not that focused on them anymore.
4. What's the one food you can't stand?
Probably eggplants.
5. What are some of the sites that you respect the most?
Various sites. Megatokyo, Madman's Cafe, Anipike, Hesperia which is now dead, um, yeah, there are so many sites I have respect for.
6. Name some of your favorite systems.
Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, the Game Boy systems, Saturn, Dreamcast, and the Play Station systems. Now these days, I mainly care about what Sony is releasing, since Sega's now dead and Nintendo has lost its touch with their recent systems. Why Sony? Sony's the only company that still brings out games from wonderful companies like Konami and Capcom.
7. If you had to spend a day without anime, manga or manhwa, what would you do?
Either be listening to music, playing a fun old school game or resting.
8. What are some of the places you want to visit?
Seattle, Miami, St. Louis, Japan, Italy, France, England, Australia, Germany, Singapore, there are so many places I want to visit.
9. What did you want to be as you were growing up?
Simple. A baseball player. I had the skills when I was young, but I didn't have the strength to do so, and I still don't.
10. What non-animated shows do you watch?
I will watch "Seinfeld" once in a while. I also like "The Three Stooges". (Curly is really hilarious.) Every now and then, I'll watch a late night show. I loved "Saved by the Bell" and "Alf" back in the old days. Yeah, I like watching old shows like those.
11. Favorite book?
Not much of a reader, but I like "Brave New World", "Great Gatsby", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Catcher in the Rye" to name a few.
12. Favorite movie?
Again, not much of a movie watcher, but I like "Mr. Holland's Opus", "Friday", "Lilo & Stitch", "High School High" (I love Tia Carrere =P), the first two "Problem Child" movies (as the third one didn't really brought my attention) and both "Rush Hour" movies (though the first one was better in my opinion) to name several.
13. What type of clothes do you wear?
Depends on what article of clothing you are asking. In general, I pretty much wear what not many people are wearing. Yeah.
In terms of shoes, I'll wear Nike most of the time, since I grew up wearing them for the most part. I will wear shoes from other athletic companies, but I wear Nike apparel the most. I wear blue Levi's jeans almost every single day. Shirts, I wear anime shirts often as well as shirts similar to anime. Other than those types, I'll wear formal shirts. I wear formal shirts from just about every company except for Tommy.
I pretty much like to match my types of clothing. Here's where I explain why I wear Nike shoes a lot now these days. I have a Nike jacket. I do not like wearing clothes from its competitors. The clothes have to match up and that's why I wear Nike shoes now these days. If I get a Reebok jacket, then I can buy Reebok shoes and such.
The three colors I enjoy wearing the most are blue, white and black. Green and gray/silver follow up. Boy, I am pretty picky with clothes, huh?
14. You're so much of an old school guy, huh?
I am. Seriously. I still say phrases like "Hey my brother!" No one says phrases like that now these days.
I am definitely not up to the latest trends here in the States. This is one of the reasons why I don't talk to people a lot. I'm the anime/manga wiseman of my friends and I don't have many friends who are into the stuff I am into. They like the popular stuff here. I like Eurobeat and Japanese pop. So, I guess my friends and I are polar opposites to a good extent. No. This is towards people in general.
Honestly, yes, I do feel like an old timer. I may be young, but I feel like I am an old timer. I guess it's because of the events I went through.
15. What do you like best about yourself?
My personality. If it wasn't for my personality, I wouldn't be the person I am now and I certainly would not like myself. However, it can be a bother also, but oh well. I don't want to go in detail.
16. What's your weakness?
I carry too many child traits (and listing them would take too long).
17. What's the one regret you want to get rid of?
Me thinking that the Nintendo 64 could bring out the three dimensional Samurai Spirits games. Boy, buying that system was one event I really regret. Well, that and missing out on learning how to play the piano. There are others as well.
18. What's the one piece of advice you can give to a person?
Do the right task. If you have problems, do what is right. Also, yeah, life is not fair, nor is it supposed to be. Life runs by itself. You might as well at least make an attempt to enjoy it.
19. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get a day?
Throughout my life, I have always had been inconsistent. On some days, I'll sleep for as much as 10 hours a day. On others, I'll sleep for as little as 5 hours. No. Less than that.
20. If you had the opportunity to meet with one particular person, who would that person be?
Just one? Martin Luther King Jr. is definitely one person.
21. What are your strong subjects?
Physical education, math and history. Even so, I hate my strongest subject: physical education. Don't see me lose. I am a real bad loser.
22. What are your weak subjects?
English and science. The latter is my worst subject. Oh and I hate American government.
23. Why do you hate games?
Oh boy. Where do I begin? Got a long while?
I hate people who worry about graphics only. Graphics don't matter. What matters is if I will have fun with the game. Even if Konami does some crazy task like making a "Mahtsukai Tai!" platform game with Super Famicom graphics for the PS2, what matters is if it will be fun. (Gee. What if Konami actually did that? If it plays like "Magical Pop'n", I would totally love that game. Hee hee.)
I also hating losing. I don't like going to arcade places and play a fighting game. If I do and I play against a person, I am there for one reason: to beat the boss of the game and those who hold me back. I don't like facing people because I am a horrible loser. That's why Japanese arcade places as well as other places in Asia don't have cabinets where people are next to each other. Players don't want to see who beated him/her and the like.
Finally, us old school gamers are on the verge of being extinct. Remember when gamers would enjoy a game of "Super Mario Brothers 3" or "Street Fighter II" or "Zelda no Densetsu"? Now these days, a gamer wouldn't bother to play an old game.
You might think that I lost interest in games. For the most part, that's true. However, if I am able to get systems like a Neo-Geo system, a Japanese Dreamcast and a Japanese Play Station, regardless of the version, I will be fine. By doing this, I can play the "Justice Gakuen" games with the omake, "Kanon", "To Heart", the "Tokimemo" games and many others. Also, I love old school games. The only games that interest me are either out in Japan, as they will be staying there or they are old school games.
24. What do you look for in an anime/manga?
That depends on the series. If it's a comedy series, it has to be funny. If it's a drama series, it needs to have a good story. Characters also determine if the series is great or not. These start a chain reaction and they determine if they will be fun in the long run. The rest are not that important as the others, but they still play a role.
25. If you were an anime character, what type of character do you want to be?
Just the good type of guy who knows how to be a nice friend. Oh and just in case trouble rises up, I'd be a fighter who uses various energy attacks. No, I don't mean like in the sense of the "Dragonball" series. I mean, if "Justice Gakuen" was an anime, I'd be the Kysuke of the series, but I will not be so much like Kysuke that I'd be a total clone of him.
26. If you were an anime character, who would be the best seiy to play as you?
This is a tough one. I would have said Seki Tomokazu-san easily since he can alter his voice a bit well, but his standard voice doesn't match well with mine. The person must have a soft touch in his or her standard voice. The seiy that has the best chance of playing as me is probably gata Megumi-san (yes, I said this Megumi and not the other Megumi: Hayashibara-sama obviously, though I think she can play as me as well if it can be done) mainly because my voice is feminine and she's one of the few seiy who can alter her voice a bit to fit each mood correctly. Plus, I guess that by observing her voice over the years, I think that she has the best chance of playing as me. The best male seiy who can play as myself is either Ueda Yji-san or Hoshi Sichir-san, but I'd lean more towards the former.
27. Favorite part about reviewing?
Expressing out my opinion and telling the people that a certain series should be recommended.
28. Least favorite part about reviewing?
Trying to remember every element that I want to say.
29. Favorite element?
Holy. That element suits me well, even though I don't always act like a nice guy.
30. Least favorite element?
Dark. I am not fond of characters that are evil just because I am a guy of justice. Plus, if I become a shadow magic user, chances are that I might not have full control of the power.
31. If you were a video game character, what's the one role you want to have?
The guy who tells the girl what the other guys like. Yeah, I want to be the next guy for "Tokimemo" who does this.
32. If various anime and video game series were remade, which character from each form of entertainment do you want to play as?
Oh boy. This is a tough one. Video game - "Samurai Spirits's" Shizumaru. Anime - Makoto of "El Hazard".
33. What's the one type of music you can't stand?
Any teenage bopper music.
34. If you had one wish, what would it be?
Being up in heaven I guess. (That's true happiness for me.)
35. What do you like about living in California?
The warm weather, the diversity, the amount of the anime related stuff here, there is so much to like.
36. What do you hate about living in California?
Uh, other than this current series of money problems, not much. I hate the fact that it's also the home of Sega's American branch.
37. What do you like about living in America?
Three words: freedom of religion.
38. What do you hate about living in America?
Majority of Americans are afraid of any issue that is different. That is, to quote Gilles Poitras in his book, "The Anime Companion", "Are you afraid of anything that is different and unusual? If so, put this book down and get a best-seller instead." What I am trying to say is Americans don't like to accept stuff from different countries. Their minds are not open to anime, manga, and for that matter, series outside of America. Honestly, I don't think America still understands the world of "El Hazard". Whoops! I meant, "I don't think America still understands the world of anime and manga." I can go on and on, but I won't.
Oh yeah. I better bring an important trait also. Americans always give words or aspects the American touch. A lot of Americans can't pronounce "karaoke" correctly, can't say the proper plural form of words like "pizza" or "vodka" or any other task like those. That irritates me. Come to think, a lot of nations do this. I guess I'm all alone on this issue.
39. What is the best word that describes you?
Original.
40. What do you look for in a game?
For the most part, I look at a game to see if I will enjoy it. The other matters are not that big of a deal, unless I give notes.
41. Favorite and least favorite animal?
I've been fond of penguins. Like some characters, I can't stand many bugs and I can't stand other various animals.
42. Favorite and least favorite fruit?
I love strawberries. I only like mangoes if they're dried for some reason. I'm not that fond of tomatoes, though I still eat them as veggies. (Yes, a tomato is a fruit in some cases.)
43. How close are you to your family?
Estimate the distance from San Jose to Quito. That's how close I am with my family. In other words, I don't have a strong bond with my family. Nada. Nil. Zilch. Zippo.
Well, as of late, we sort of understand each other now. Yeah. We still don't carry any common traits though.
44. If you become a voice actor, which company do you want to work for?
Uh, I want to work for just about any company, even if the company does not have a good reputation.
45. You have the opportunity to have an artist draw you. Who do you want that artist to be?
Only one? I would have picked so many artists, but if I can only pick one, I'd pick Takahashi Rumiko-sama.
46. Do you prefer animation series from the east or from the west?
I grew up on animated series from the west, but now these days, I like animated series from the east because I want stories in animated series. Western series or rather a good amount of them don't do this so well.
47. Do you have any pets?
Just a fish.
48. What's your sports dream?
Winning a championship for a San Jose team.
49. If you become a voice actor, what type of roles do you want to do?
Any. Also, I want to do a task that few male voice actors have done in the world of anime or video games in Japan if it has been done before: play as a girl. Yeah, I do have the ability to play as a girl to some extent.
50. Who are your favorite seiy?
Ha ha ha! Got a while? In no particular order, Hayashibara Megumi-sama, Mitsuishi Kotono-sama, Inoue Kikuko-sama, Koyasu Takehito-san, Seki Tomokazu-san, Hisakawa Aya-sama, Hiramatsu Akiko-sama, Horie Yui-sama, Ueda Yji-san, Kuwashima Hko-san, Higuchi Chieko-san, Okiayu Rytar-san, Yamamoto Maria-sama (been starting to like her), Matsumoto Rika-san, Ishida Akira-san, gata Megumi-san, Midorikawa Hikaru-san, Matsumoto Yasunori-san, Yamadera Kichi-san, Tsuru Hiromi-sama, Hidaka Noriko-sama, Sakuma Rei-sama, Takayama Minami-sama, Tma Yumi-sama, Iizuka Mayumi-san, Iwao Junko-sama, Tomizawa Michie-sama, Neya Michiko-san, Yamaguchi Kappei-san, etc.
51. What do you think is the weakness of the site?
I borrow elements from certain sites too much, but that's one weakness I can live with. There are others, but I won't go into them.
52. What do you like about running your site?
Gee. I don't know. Ha ha ha! I like the fact that as I update, I express what I feel.
53. What do you hate about running your site?
Trying to be too perfect in terms of grammar and spelling.
54. If you're stranded on an island and you can take one thing with you, what would it be?
"A ship to take me back home." - Horie Yui-sama in an interview from the January 2002 edition of HM^3/Hyper Multimedia Music Magazine when she was asked this question. Oh. The translation of that interview can be found here.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
55. What's your least favorite color?
It depends on the scenario. In my life, there weren't many things I liked that were pink. Same goes for purple. Still, it depends on the scenario.
56. Favorite vegetable?
I like potatoes, asparagus, bak choi (Chinese cabbage) and broccolli.
57. Least favorite vegetable?
Eggplants and peppers at the top of my head.
58. Least favorite sport?
Any extreme sport, swimming, badminton (I can play, but I don't consider myself good), tennis (same case), etc.
59. Coffee or tea?
Back then, 9 out of 10 times, I would prefer tea if it's jade tea (with that tenth time having coffee being for fun usually). Unlike coffee, tea actually helps your health. I remember that according to some report in the United Kingdom, tea cuts down the risk of a heart attack by at least 30 or 40 percent. Now, I've decided to stop drinking them so that I don't start some sort of habit.
60. Liked sugar in your tea/coffee?
I rarely did put sugar in my tea. As for coffee, I liked lots of sugar, cream and such.
61. Do you find it surprising that there might be a girl who likes you?
Honestly, yeah. I'm not like the typical guy out there in terms of personality, interests and such.
62. Do you like spicy food?
Like "Kanon's" Shiori, I don't, though I will eat food like that once in a while. I don't know why, but when I eat Asian food, I just don't associate the group with the spicy food. In other words, I eat Asian spicy food the least.
63. What's your favorite Asian dessert?
Too many to be a fav. =P
64. What's your favorite non-Asian dessert?
I love moments with an eclair, especially if it is accompanied with vanilla ice cream.
65. Favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate with peanut butter, strawberry and vanilla as well as some others.
66. Favorite candy?
Fast Breaks, those cookies and cream candies from Hersheys, and some others.
67. Favorite quote?
"There are good lies and there are bad lies in the world." - Haruka, "Love Hina".
Sometimes, people make mistakes and there are cases in which a lie is good to keep a situation steady.
68. Can you sing?
Somewhat.
69. Breakfast: western or eastern?
Don't care. Western food will pop up more often, since I was raised in Cal.
70. Are you fast?
Back then, I was able to run a mile in 7 and a half minutes. Now, I have seem to lost a step, but I can say that I still have some speed in me.
71. What time do you usually wake up?
Before 7.
72. What time do you usually sleep?
With rules in tact, 11, but at times, I'll sleep at midnight or past that.
73. If you become president of the United States, what would you do first?
Either make sure that the law systems and such are not corrupt (and believe me that they really, really are corrupt) or apologize to various countries for the actions we've taken.
74. If you dye your hair, what color would it be?
To be honest, I wouldn't be fond of it, but the color would be a reddish-brown.
75. What's the first task you do when you get up in the morning?
Check the time.
76. What's the last task you do before you sleep?
It depends on the mood, I guess.
77. Do you listen to the radio?
Don't do it anymore. I only listen to it for R&B songs and songs from old artists like Barry White mostly or I listen to it for sports games if I'm not near a television.
78. What do you do online?
Update the site, check e-mail and chat for the most part.
79. What's the one non-anime/manga/game/manhwa gig you want to do?
That's easy. I want to host a show that brings various Asian music videos from Japanese to Chinese. Either that or be in a music video of an artist like Park Jung Hyun. If I can't do either of those tasks, then I would like to win a poker championship.
80. What's one task you wish you can do more often?
Smile willingly. When I was little, I would always smile. Now, I don't smile that much anymore.
81. Who are your favorite music artists?
Filipino: One Voice, Pinay, Carol Banawa and Kai to name a few.
Japanese: Hamasaki Ayumi-sama, Amuro Namie-sama, Utada Hikaru-chan, Hayashibara Megumi-sama, T.M. Revolution, Larc en Ciel, Horie Yui-sama, Puffy, etc.
Korean: BoA, Park Jung Hyun, S.E.S., Baby V.O.X., that one group C.O.O.L. I think it's called, etc.
Chinese: I don't know their native names, but Faye Wong and Sammy Chang (I think that's her name, though I don't know the traditional ones of those two) to name a couple.
Asian - other: I love Kristine Sa.
Eurobeat: Hamasaki Ayumi-sama, Key-A-Kiss, Dave Rodgers, Max Coveri, Leslie Parrish, Lolita, D. Essex, etc.
R&B: IMX/Immature, Boyz II Men, Monica Arnold, Brandy Norwood (yes, I know what their last names are), Keith Sweat, Babyface/Kenneth Edmonds for some of you, etc.
Dance: I can't say that I have a fav, though I like that one D.J. that did songs like "Just a Dream".
Old school: Barry White, B.B. King, the Coles, and a few others.
82. Who are your favorite visual artists?
Takahashi Rumiko-sensei, Akamatsu Ken-sensei, Watase Y-sensei, And Natsumi-sensei, Asamiya Kia-sensei, Fujishima Ksuke-sensei, Fujisawa Tru-sensei, Lee Myung Jin, Kim Kang Won, that one artist who does the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" comic series, Adam Warren, Nanase Aoi-sensei, whoever did the art in "Quiz Nanairo Dreams", etc.
83. Do you listen to rap/hip-hop, alternative, classic, country and church music?
Yeah. Am I crazy about them? No.
84. What do you do when you are bored?
Sleep or daydream.
85. What's on your mouse pad?
The Ainu sisters of the "Samurai Spirits" series, drawn by Nanase Aoi-sensei, though I don't use it as a mouse pad because for some reason, no mouse really should cover the image. I also have one of "Love Hina" with Naru, Kitsune and Haruka enjoying themselves by an onsen.
86. What's your idea of the perfect date?
Oh geez. Uh, she has to be nice. She doesn't need to be exciting. Oh yeah. She has to be Catholic also or our parents would have fits of some sort. -_-'
87. Why is it that you won't go out with someone?
The best way to answer this, which seems funny, yet true, is that by going out with someone, I am bound to break a heart.
88. If anime/manga/manhwa/video games/any other form of Japanese entertainment as well as those of your culture never entered into your life, what would you be doing?
Besides being a normal guy constantly working, I'd either be really good at card games or sports.
89. What would you name your future son?
Matthew Pilapil (or plains in Tagalog).
90. What would you name your future daughter?
I'd let my wife do that, but if she can't pick a name, I'd name her Hikari Ling. Seriously! I would!
91. What would your dream fan art be?
Too many fit here.
92. What would your say is the most attention grabbing act you have ever done?
If by that, you mean people asking me about something, it would be having my binder with the cover of one of the "Ultra Maniac" manga volumes. It has Ayu and Nina out in some field. You wouldn't believe how many people asked me if I drew that picture. Oh and to this day, I still carry it around.
93. How many friends do you have?
Too many. Ha ha ha!
94. How many of them know you personally?
Not many.
95. Has a friend passed away?
As of now, I had two friends who passed away and ironically, both of them are Pilipino.
96. Would you rather work for an entertainment company or stick with doing fan works as in fan subs?
Oh geez. This is a tough question. That depends on the situation. If I get my own personal translator, I would work for a company and then do tasks like telling Sega to not hold events before a Comiket. If I don't get one, then I'll stick with fan works. I'm more inclined towards the latter because I never had experience with a professional company.
97. What was your most funny game moment?
Either my delayed Ch Kasane Ate (one of the few attack names I probably still need to spell properly) I performed to counter my brother's Burn Knuckle attack in "The King of Fighters 1996" or the time I had in "Capcom vs. SNK II". After both my opponent and I kept rolling past each other, I kept using Athena's crouching hard attack and I won the match in the end. I think this one was more funnier.
98. What's your longest winning streak in a fighting game?
I think it has to be my 13-game winning streak in "Street Fighter Zero III" with Ken four years ago in Fanime.
99. What would you say is one matter people need to stop worrying about in terms of entertainment?
The "Street Fighter II" boss name issue. I mean, come on! Sure, I know about it, but personally, I grew out of it and now, I call the final boss "Vega", the claw guy "Balrog" and the boxer "M. Bison".
100. Ah, here's the 100th question. If you won that chance to make your game a long time ago, what would it be like? (Yes, there was once a contest where you could create your own game.)
If that idea was transfered to today, I'd make my own "Capcom vs. SNK" game. It wouldn't have many secrets, but besides great audio, visuals, fighters and mechanics, you'd also get to pick the order of the bosses you want to face "Rockman" style and Vega would be the final boss because of the "Rockman" format, which makes it more fitting. Of course, back in the old days, I would have a hard time deciding.
101. What is your best hand?
Right. I tried to swing a bat left-handed when I was younger, but I don't do that anymore. While we're at it, I kick any ball that's suitable for kicking with my right foot.
102. If you were born the opposite sex, what would have your name been?
Most likely Irene.
103. Do you think you can survive a day with your gender being changed?
I guess.
104. Would you perform the task?
Mostly likely not. If I do it, I'd only do it to know how girls deal with life.
105. Do you wear contacts or glasses?
No, but chances are that somewhere down the line, I'll have to wear glasses.
106. What's your favorite card game to play?
Various. Poker, blackjack, speed, I can play just about any type of card game.
107. Have you ever cosplayed before?
Unless you count my poor cosplay attempt as a Crazy 88 member back at this year's Fanime, no. I would probably cosplay as Jin Chon Shu or Ken's "Psycho Soldier" self. The only girl I'd cosplay as is King. =P
108. When you go to a park, what's the one thing you always look for?
The swing set. Whenever you're on a swing, you have some sort of feeling that's like your troubles flowing away from you.
