The Ramblings and Mutterings of a Preoccupied Mind:Over the years of playing, I have written a few musings on the game of Dungeons & Dragons, some of which are serious, some light-hearted, and others simply thought-provoking. If an argument arose during play that wasn’t officially settled, or if there is a long running debate about something, I may have penned my position on the issue. Some articles are “official” stuff in the Lorenvale campaign; the other exist only to give you a glimpse of how my brain works.
Confessions of a Dungeons & Dragons Addict by M. Joseph Young
One of the first articles I read to help convince me that it was not only "okay" for Christians to play D&D, but that it was even encouraged in some cases. Extremely well-written, logically thought out, and addresses most of the major issues with the topic. If only more Christians would think this way....

After many years of playing D&D, I decided to write my own article addressing the lingering issue of Christian participation. It's purely an attempt at ordered steps through a logical series of arguments. After several revisions, I hope it's not still full of holes.

My own very first D&D article. I had quickly encountered the different play styles of my debut group--I'm a "rules lawyer / character developer" while several of the others were "power gamers." We debated, and because I was the newbie, I lost. This was my sideways rebuttal.

After a few years musing--and debating--over what the nine alignments actually meant, I finally broke down and wrote my own thoughts on the subject. Yes, it's a tired topic, but maybe no one has seen it like I do...?

Another fit of mental rambling. As I age, I seem to do more of that. This one sprang from a simple question, which is indirectly answered by the Player's Handbook: "How much can someone with a 20 Strength lift?" That quickly devolved into questions about a 20 Dexterity, 20 Intelligence, etc. This was my answer.
OFFICIAL CANON IN LORENVALE
by Andrew Trauger
This is probably the single most creative thing I've ever done for D&D, even if I do say so myself. As I mentioned in the opening paragraph of the home page, I'm working on a novel. Probably won't ever finish it. But already, I've had a tavern scene where the PCs are playing cards, and the outcome is crucial. The game they played was called Knights' Heads, and here's the rules.
Death in D&D (in Lorenvale, anyway) by Andrew Trauger
No one like to lose his character. But it happens sometimes. Here I address the pros and cons to PC death, and set the parameters for dealing with death in the Lorenvale campaign. Demonstrates why death should be feared, why the pantheon is important, and what happens to a departed soul who hasn't acknowledged the gods. |
