Kevin sighed. "But you didn't see the look on her face when she talked to me in the hallway. And, on top of that, she was practically undressing me with her eyes when she was talking to Laura about her medical history. It was the one time that I was actually thankful that Laura couldn't see." Kevin ran his hand through his hair nervously. "I just don't know if I should tell Laura that she's THE Linda. I guess I'm just paranoid about it."
"I would just wait and see if Linda says anything of a more personal nature to you. Not that wanting to apologize to you wasn't personal, but maybe it was nothing more then wanting to tie up loose ends. Maybe she feels she needs to say it, even if you don't accept it, before she can move on with her life," AJ said, sitting down next to Whitney.
"AJ's right," Whitney said, getting comfortable with AJ on the loveseat. "I think you're just jumping to conclusions. You were probably the last person she expected to see, too."
"Yeah--yeah, Whit, AJ... you're right. I guess only time will tell," Kevin said, feeling a little better about the situation. "Thanks you guys." Kevin said goodbye and went to his room.
"So, everything went well then?" Misty asked. Laura nodded with a smile. "Yeah, and I'm kickin' myself for not doing this sooner. I don't know what I was afraid of, I really don't."
Misty gave her friend a hug. "Well, you're doing it now, and that's the main thing, girl," she said, giving Laura a pat on the back. "So, when do you go back for your second physical?"
"Two weeks from today," Laura said. "Another physical exam like today, only they're going to do some bloodwork to make sure I'm not anemic or a hemophiliac or stuff like that, to make sure that doing the surgery will be OK. So, needless to say, I'm not looking forward to being stuck with needles," Laura added with a nervous laugh, then changed the subject. "So what are you up to today, chica?"
"Going to meet Howie at his place." Misty said. Laura could practically hear the smile in Misty's voice. "So anyway, how's that going? Like I need to ask," Laura said, giggling.
"Couldn't be better... couldn't be better at all!"
"Uh-huh..." Laura said with a smirk. "Is that all you're going to tell me? I want details, girl! Like, does he like it slow n' sweet or rough n' tough?" Laura was in hysterics by this time. Misty laughed sarcastically.
"Verrrrry fun-ny, girl," Misty said, "and anyway, it's really none of your business!"
"Well, you're grouchy, so either you haven't gotten any yet, or it wasn't that good," Laura said, trying to piss Misty off and in turn, getting her to tell her what she wanted to know. As always, it worked like a charm.
"Not that I need to prove anything to YOU, but it was very, VERY good. The best I've ever had, actually," Misty said, practically shouting. Suddenly she was about to walk out, when she realized what Laura had done. "DAMMIT!" she said, laughing.
"Just get outta here, go get yourself some more Howie," Laura said, both her and Misty still laughing as Misty walked out the door. Laura smiled to herself, satisfied. "I love doing that to her!" she thought aloud, as she heard the door click shut.
Kevin walked with Laura into the clinic. Lyn (or rather, Linda,) was behind the desk looking over a file with the receptionist. "Hey, glad to see you're here early," Lyn said, smiling at Kevin. Kevin refused to meet her stare. "Well, we had a cancellation, so I can take you back and take your BP and temperature so you're ready for the doctor. I'll also do the blood withdrawal, so we can send that to the lab right away." Lyn spoke the words to Laura, but her eyes were on Kevin the whole time, and he knew it even without looking at her. He could feel her stare.
"Great. The sooner we get that part done, the better," Laura said with a nervous laugh.
"Then, let's go and get started!" Lyn said, and Kevin and Laura followed her.
"Once again, Laura, you check out just fine, and I think we can schedule your surgery for about a month from now. Once your bloodtests come back from the lab I'll know for certain, and I'll have those results sometime tomorrow," Dr. Bob said, smiling. "We will give you a call sometime tomorrow and let you know, then we can schedule your surgery."
Laura felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. "That's great, Dr. Bob, that's just wonderful. Thanks," she said, as he shook her hand. Kevin and Laura walked out of the office.
"Hey, before we leave, point me in the right direction to the restroom, please?" Laura said, and Kevin led her to the restroom.
"I'll wait for you and Buck outside, OK?" Kevin said. Laura nodded as she closed the door behind her.
Kevin walked outside and stood on the front sidewalk. Suddenly he got the feeling that he wasn't alone. Just before he turned to look, his feelings were confirmed by a voice.
"So, what's with this girl, anyway? Friend?" It was Linda. There was a bit of jealousy in her voice.
"I don't need to explain myself to you, Linda," Kevin said, disgusted.
"It's 'Lyn' now, Kevin, not 'Linda.' I never could stand that name, you know that," Lyn said, now standing beside Kevin.
"Fine--whatever, Lyn. I still don't need to tell you anything about Laura and I."
"I guess that means there is something to tell, otherwise you wouldn't be getting so defensive," Lyn said, lighting a cigarette.
Kevin was silent as he took the cigarette from her and put it out. "Fine, I won't smoke around you." Kevin still said nothing. "Well, at least tell me what she's got that I don't. I mean, come on, wouldn't you rather have a woman that has all her 'senses?'"
"Who the fuck are you to say something like that?!" Kevin said, obviously angry. "As far as I'm concerned, Laura's got more 'sense' then you ever did, Lyn," he said. "And besides that, I'm surprised as hell to hear you say something so insensitive, almost implying that she's less of a woman because she can't see. I'm tempted to go back in there and get your ass fired for that comment!"
Kevin was about to do just as he said, when he saw Laura and Buck walking out the first set of doors. "Laura's coming, and I suggest you keep half-assed comments like that last one to yourself, if you want to keep your job," Kevin said, then promptly turning and walking to the door. Just as he got there, Laura came out.
"Hey Kevin!" Laura said, kissing him. "I'm ready to go... you?" she asked. Lyn walked by on her way back in the building and Buck growled at her, making her watch her step around him as she walked faster to the door. I guess animals CAN sense bad people, Kevin thought to himself smiling, as he and Laura head to the car and drove home.
