"Actually we just put in the Star Wars movie, The Phantom Menace. Wanna watch it with us?" Howie offered. Misty spoke up too. "Yeah, we're waiting for Laura and Kevin. They're coming over as soon as Laura gets the call from the doctor's office. As long as her blood tests come out OK, then they'll schedule her surgery."
Not so long as one minute after Misty said that, Laura and Kevin walked into AJ's door. "Hey y'all," Laura said cheerfully. "Before you even ask, I'll tell you what happened."
Laura paused to make the situation more dramatic. After only a couple seconds of silence it was more then Misty could handle. "Will you TELL US already!?!?" she said, practically yelling. Laura smiled. "Impatient, aren't we, Mis?" she laughed, then continued. "I am scheduled for exactly 2 weeks from today, May 22nd. Eight o'clock in the morning." she finished, as everyone in the entire room collectively sighed a sigh of relief. This was it, finally! Everyone couldn't be happier, especially Kevin. If all went right, not only would his wish for Laura to see come true, but with any luck, he would never have to see or deal with Linda again.
"Well, I appreciate y'all supporting me, but I'm so tired from being poked and prodded again that I must take a nap." Laura stood up, and Kevin stood up with her, walking with her to his room.
"Take a 'nap,' huh?!" AJ chuckled. Whitney laughed too. "Yup, we took a 'nap' this morning too, didn't we, AJ?" she asked, still laughing. Nick chimed in. "Yep, Patti and I took a 'nap' too," he said, winking at Patti who just giggled like a teenager.
"Alright, y'all behave yourselves, now," Brian said, laughing a bit himself. "I know from experience, Laura is probably VERY tired, and I can guarantee she wasn't poked and prodded nearly as much as I was for my heart surgery. Cut her some slack, will ya?" he said, trying to be serious, but still chuckling a little bit.
"Yeah, you're right Brian," Leighanne said. "We should just get back to the movie," she said, pressing the play button on the VCR remote control. Suddenly she had a realization. "Just think, you guys," she said, pressing the pause button, "in 2 weeks, Laura could be sitting here with us, enjoying watching a movie for the first time in fifteen years. Something we do quite often and take for granted. At least, I know I do sometimes..." Leighanne's voice trailed off.
"I know, I've been praying for that possibility for the past 15 years that one day, this would happen for her. It just seems so surreal, you know?" Misty said, leaning her head on Howie's shoulder as the movie was begun in silence.
***one week later***
"So, Misty's going to drop you off here? I'm very happy that the place is straightened out enough that you won't be tripping over stuff," Kevin said into the phone. He was over at his house, cleaning up some of the mess that the workers had made. He was glad that his remodeling was almost finished. As much as he liked staying with AJ and appreciated his hospitality, he couldn't wait to get back into his own home.
"Well, it don't take much to make me trip sometimes," Laura said laughing. "Yep, she's got a couple stops to make before dropping me off, then she's going to head to Howie's. Annnd, she's yelling for me to get my ass off the phone now so I guess I'll see you in, oh maybe, an hour or so?"
"Sounds great. See you then, Laura."
"Kisses!" Laura said, then hung up the phone. Kevin hung up on his end too. He smiled as "kisses" echoed in his ears. It was how Laura ended every phone conversation that they've had since they've been a couple, and it wasn't so much that she said it, it was how she said it. Kevin's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the contractor's voice. Within a few minutes, Kevin was discussing some final arrangements on his home.
Kevin looked at the clock. "Twelve-thirty. Laura should be here soon," he said aloud, sitting down looking around his place. Little cleaning up here, little straightening there, and the place will be good as new, he thought, when he heard a knock on the door. Kevin practically sprung out of the chair and sprinted to the door. Needless to say, when he saw it wasn't Laura, he was quite shocked. It was Linda.
"What do you want?" Kevin asked coldly, walking back into his house leaving the door open. Linda took it upon herself to enter. Kevin shot her a dirty look then continued. "I don't have all day, Linda, or Lyn, whoever the hell you are."
"Well!" Lyn said with a huff. "You certainly aren't a very hospitable host, are you?"
"You can skip the tea party commentary, Lyn. Why don't you just tell me why you're here so you can leave."
"Fine then, I just want one thing, Kevin. I want you. I want you back," Lyn said.
A look of shock came upon Kevin's face. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talking about, Kevvy. C'mon, I know you want me, I can see that look in your eyes."
"The only thing in my eyes is hatred for you. I can't believe you have the nerve to come here talking to me this way, especially after how you used me. What makes you think that I could ever forgive that? I thought you loved me for me."
Lyn walked seductively toward Kevin. She put her hand on his cheek and slowly caressed him down his neck and chest. "Does Laura love you for you? Can her touch make you feel this way, like I know you're feeling right now? Don't deny it, Kevvy. I know you want me, too. Just give in," she said, her voice almost a whisper.
Kevin closed his eyes for a half-second, feeling Lyn's touch on his chest. All it took was a half-second for him to remember how he felt when he found out how she betrayed him. Kevin pushed her away quickly. "Get out of here, Lyn. You're not welcome in my home."
"You can do that, Kevin? Can you just toss me out and forget me? I can't forget you. Not a day goes by when I don't think of you... when I don't miss you... when I don't love you..."
With that, Lyn moved in quicky and kissed Kevin. The kiss didn't last long, though, as Kevin pushed her away. "Now you've definitely worn on my patience, Lyn. You need to go... NOW!" This only made Lyn want Kevin more, and she kissed him once again, harder and longer then the last kiss.
This time their kiss was interrupted not by Kevin, but by Misty and Laura's arrival. Kevin froze as he saw Misty standing in the doorway with Laura at her side. "Kevin? We're here," Laura said, waiting for Kevin's response. "Hey, Laura," he said, avoiding Misty's accusing stare and trying to get Lyn to leave at the same time. Lyn finally got the hint and left, and Misty shot her a dirty look when she passed her as well.
Kevin walked up to Laura and put his arms around her. "Hey, baby," he said, kissing her. "Why don't you sit down here and I'll go get you something to drink. Pepsi?" he asked, leading her to the sofa.
"Yeah, that sounds great, Kev. Thank you," Laura said as she made herself comfortable.
Kevin walked to his kitchen and Misty followed him close behind. "I'm going to help him," she said, practically walking on his heels.
"So, you want a Pepsi also?" Kevin said going into the refrigerator. Misty sharply closed the door. "Don't pull that with me, Richardson. You know how close I was to blowing the whistle on you?? Why don't you tell me what we just walked in on, then I'll blow the whistle on you."
"Misty, please, cut me some slack. That woman threw herself at me. Just the thought of her touching me repulses me. I have no idea what I ever saw in that bitch."
"Well, you didn't appear to be not enjoying yourself!"
"You were in the room for, what, two seconds, and you think you know everything that happened?? I'll tell you what happened, Misty. I've got nothing to hide." Misty sat down and Kevin continued. "Lyn came over, uninvited, and told me she wanted me back. I told her to leave, that I wanted nothing to do with her ever again, and she just started touching me, then before I knew it was coming, she kissed me. I pushed her away, and she kissed me again, harder. That's when you walked in." Kevin then sat down opposite Misty. "I would never do that to Laura. I... I think I love her, Misty," he said, his voice softening. "I could never hurt her like that. And even if I weren't with Laura, I still wouldn't go back to Linda. I can't be with someone that I can't trust."
Misty sighed. "I'm sorry Kevin, I should've known better. But I have to say, it didn't look good from where I was standing, trust me."
"Oh I believe it. So, now what?" Kevin asked, looking at Misty. "Please don't tell Laura... I really don't think that she should hear this from you."
"So are you saying you are going to tell her?"
"Yeah, I've got to. And I've gotta be the one to tell her. Anyway, I think she'll find it awfully suspicious that I need to go down to the police station and get a restraining order." Kevin said, chuckling a bit to try to lighten the situation.
Misty smiled. "Restraining order? You really don't want to see her again, do you?"
"You've got that right!" Kevin said, sighing. "Well, let's bring these sodas out so Laura don't think we died in here or something," he said, laughing.
"Sounds like a plan."
"So you won't tell Laura? You promise you'll let me tell her?"
"Yeah, Kevin, I promise..."
