Shades Of The Past ~ Chapter 15

6:43 PM, August 22, 2000

Laura glanced at the clock, as she ran frantically from her bedroom to her bathroom. Misty, who had stopped over to keep Laura company while she got ready, was chuckling as Laura tripped rounding the corner.

"Misty, shut up, you are NO help to me," Laura said, trying hard to be mad, but letting out a laugh as well. "I damn near fall on my ass and all you can do is sit there and laugh at me."

"I'm sorry, Laura," Misty said, still chuckling. "It's just that you'd think your ass is on fire or something. You still have twenty minutes."

"Seventeen, actually," Laura corrected.

Misty glanced at the clock. "Umm, sixteen, actually," she replied, indicating another minute had passed. Just then they heard a knock at the door.

"Oh, shit, please tell me that can't be him already!" Laura shrieked as she took out her lipstick and twisted it up. "If that's Nick, tell him I'll be just a few minutes yet."

"So is it correct to assume that you want me to get the door??" Misty asked sarcastically, knowing that it would piss Laura off.

"Uhh, yeah!" Laura said, giving her a shove then going back to applying her makeup. Misty chuckled as she walked into Laura's living room to answer the door. Indeed, it was Nick.

"Nick, please, come on in," Misty said, gesturing for Nick to come in. Misty smiled when she saw him. He was wearing a sport coat over a dressier shirt, nice pants. Even polished the shoes he was wearing, which were also very nice. Either that, or they were brand new. "Damn Nick, you look good. You almost made me say, 'AJ, who?'" she said with a wink. Nick blushed, and as he walked in, Misty saw that he had a small bouquet of flowers behind his back. "What'cha got there, Nicky??" she asked, peeking around him to see.

"Just some flowers," Nick said, pulling them out from behind his back. "I wasn't expecting you to be here, so that's why I had them hid. What are you doing here, anyway?"

"Nothin' much, I just stopped by to keep Laura company while she got ready. Which, by the way, she said she'd be ready in a few," Misty said, gesturing for Nick to sit down. Nick put the flowers down on the coffee table and sat down in the chair across from the couch, and Misty sat down on the end of the couch. Looking at him, she could see how nervous he was. "So..." Misty said with a smile and a sigh.

Nick took a deep breath. "So... so, what?" he asked, drumming his hands on his knees.

Misty chuckled. "So, what are you doing tonight?" she asked curiously.

"Dinner. And I thought maybe dancing. Does she like to dance?" Nick asked nervously, now twiddling his thumbs.

"Sheesh, you are nervous, aren't you?" she asked, pointing out the obvious. "Nick, I'm sure whatever you have planned, she'll love it. And if it's any consolation, she's just as nervous as you are, if not more. In fact, she changed clothes about five times," Misty added with a chuckle. Nick just smiled, still very jittery. Misty again was about to speak when she heard Laura's heels coming down the hallway. Nick and Misty stood up as Laura rounded the corner into the living room.

Laura stopped in her steps as she saw Nick, her breath catching in her throat. Oh my God, he looks amazing, she thought, taking him in from across the room. She smiled, took a deep breath, and slowly walked over to where Nick was standing.

Nick looked at Laura as she approached him. His eyes slowly moved down her body and back up again, drinking in every part of her. She was wearing a red dress, spaghetti straps, low-cut in the front and even lower in the back (a bit more so then what she would normally wear,) tighter-fitting to the waist and flaring out slightly at the hips, coming to a little more than half-way down her thighs. The dress swayed softly against her as she walked. Nick unconsciously gulped as she got closer, a wide smile growing on his face. He couldn't believe how beautiful she looked. "Nick," Laura said smiling at him, as she now stood in front of him. "Nick, you look... great. Amazing. Great."

Misty chimed in. "You said, 'Great,' already, Laura."

"Shut up, Misty," Laura said, waving her hand at her to communicate that she really didn't need her input. Misty just chuckled as she walked over to Laura's entertainment center.

Nick just laughed nervously. "I--I was going to say the same to you. And even more so. Laura, you look absolutely stunning." Nick smirked sexily at her as he leaned down to her ear. "Even though you have your hair up," he whispered teasingly, then standing back up. Laura just shook her head as she looked into his eyes, forgetting herself for a moment as they stood there together. Nick suddenly remembered the flowers. Picking them up he handed them to Laura. "I hope you like them," he said, hopeful that she was a girl that liked getting flowers.

"Oh yes, Nick, they're beautiful," Laura said, smelling their sweet aroma.

"OK, you guys," Misty said, pulling Laura's camera out of her entertainment center. "Picture time! C'mon, and stand closer!"

"Oh dammit, Misty, must you?? It's not like we're going to the prom or something," Laura chuckled as did Nick.

"Misty, I don't mind," Nick said, standing slightly behind Laura, putting his arms around her. "Besides," he said quietly, loud enough for only Laura to hear, "it gives me a good excuse to hold you in my arms." Nick squeezed her slightly after he said that, making Laura weak in the knees. Taking a deep breath, Laura waited for Misty to snap the picture.

"OK, now, smile!" Misty said, aiming the camera as they smiled. Snapping the picture, she quickly spoke up again. "Hold it! Let's get one more!"

"Yes, 'Mom,'" Laura said, rolling her eyes. Nick smiled wider as he pulled Laura closer to him. Laura suddenly felt butterflies in her stomach as Misty snapped another picture.

"OK, I'm done," Misty said proudly.

"Thank God," Laura said, glad that the picture taking was over, but not moving away from Nick too fast. That, after all, was the best part of getting the pictures taken. Nick took her hand as he smiled at her, leading her to the door.

"OK, you guys, behave. Remember, Laura, your curfew is 1 am!" Misty joked.

"OK, 'Mom!' See you later!" Laura said, laughing as she and Nick walked out the door.

"Catch ya later, Misty," Nick said, pulling the door shut behind him as he and Laura walked to his car. Misty watched at the window as Nick opened the car door for her before getting in himself, then driving off. Aww, that's sweet, she thought, grabbing the flowers Nick got for Laura and taking them to the kitchen to put them in a vase.
