Chapter 2: Formatting
8.0 MARGINS
The last section in this chapter will briefly introduce the
concept of margins and tabs.
The ruler is used to show the document's margins. The unit of measurement shown in the following example is centimeters. The units of measurement for the ruler can be changed by selecting Options in the Tools menu and then selecting the General tab.
If the ruler is visible, it will appear under the tool bar as shown below.
Figure 8.1
Step 8.01 If the ruler is not visible, choose Ruler from the View menu to display it.
Step 8.02 Position the insertion point anywhere in the first main paragraph of text beginning "Ampac Marketing Limited is one of Australasia's top performing ...".
The ruler which is displayed just under the tool bars shows the location of the left and right margins for the paragraph. This is illustrated in the figure below.
Figure 8.2
Moving these margins will determine how much text will fit on a line and where the line will start and end.
Step 8.03 If the right margin is not shown, use the bottom scroll bar to move across the page until it is displayed.
Step 8.04 Position the mouse pointer over the right margin indicator and hold down the left mouse button. A dotted line will appear down the side of the text indicating where the margin lies.
Figure 8.3
Step 8.05 While holding the mouse button down drag the margin 5cm to the left.
Figure 8.4
Step 8.06 Release the mouse button. The margin for that paragraph will have moved to the left.
Figure 8.5
The same method can be used to move the left margin.
Step 8.07 Move the right margin back to its original position (16cm on the ruler).
Figure 8.6
Indent margins
Step 8.08 Position the insertion point anywhere in the
first bullet pointed paragraph. The left margin indicators for
this paragraph are different.
The top part of the indicator shows where the first line in the paragraph will begin. That is the line starting with the bullet point.
The bottom part of the indicator shows where any other lines in the paragraph will begin.
Figure 8.7
These margins can also be moved in the same way as shown above. However, the easiest way to move them is by using the indent button on the toolbar.
Step 8.09 Click on the right indent button on the tool bar.
Figure 8.8
The paragraph will move to the right as shown below.
Figure 8.9
Step 8.10 Click on the left indent button on the tool bar to move the paragraph back.
Step 8.11 Save the document. You will need it for the next chapter.
