Part VI—Canal Fields
On the opposite side of the canal from the Waitrose supermarket lies Canal Fields, an area gifted to the Town by Lord Brownlow, one

of many distinguished owners of the Ashridge estate after the Duke of Bridgewater. A pathway under the railway leads to what was once Berkhamsted Park but is now a housing estate. In the picture below, which looks upstream towards the double lock and basin of Gas locks One and Two, the bridge to this footpath can just

be seen. The underpass to the railway was originally built for the narrow gauge track that ran from the coal sidings the far side of the railway to the gas works, replaced by an industrial estate.

Above, the lower of the double locks, looking back towards Canal Fields. Below, looking downstream towards the upper of these two locks. Behind the photographer in the lower picture is Billet Lane. This provides access (via a footpath) to Berkhamsted Common, Northchurch Farm, the Ashridge estate and Coldharbour Farm. Pictures available on the Graham Greene Trail.
