700 students to participate in
intramural basketball
By Joshua Muench
March
Madness has come early for over 700 ORU students and alumni involved
in the intramurals program. This basketball fever has spread beyond
our men's and women's teams, past the Mabee Center Maniacs, and
infiltrated through nearly every floor on campus. From now until
the first week of March, hundreds of ORU students will flock to
the Aerobics Center each night as close to 100 different teams compete
for the right to be called league champions.
Tuesday, January 14, marked the official start of this year's season.
What a season it should be! The men's division boasts close to 80
teams as compared to last year's 64 teams. On the women's side,
18 solid teams look to offer some of the best competition in recent
years. The teams will play one to two games per week over the next
seven weeks before playoff competition begins.
Many students are clearly taking advantage of the fun and competitive
nature of the intramurals program. Michael Homan, director of student
activities, (under whom the intramurals program now functions),
describes the intramurals program as an integral part of the ORU
experience. "Intramurals provide a great opportunity for students
to enjoy themselves outside of the classroom. It is our goal to
bring a renewed spirit of excellence and accountability to this
program in order to give the students the best experience possible."
A key element in allowing students to get the most out of this basketball
season is the creation of various skill leagues. In the men's division,
there is an A, B+, B and C league, while the women can play in either
an A or B league. These leagues range in skill level from the highly
competitive A league to the less intense, but fun, C league. Con-sequently,
players at various skill levels are able to get the most out of
their intramural experience. It seems to be working.
"Intramurals have taught me to value competition and good sportsmanship
in a fun environment," Consuming Fire senior Jeremy McQuown said.
Regardless of league or skill level, all participants and their
fans agree that the wing unity and entertainment brought about through
intramurals is incredible.
The basketball season is just the tip of the iceberg in the realm
of intramurals. This semester will also include an all-school ping
pong tournament, bowling, softball, soccer, 3x3 football and a cross
country race featuring a course designed by one of our own professors.
