Are you called
to lead worship?
André Gonzalez offers some advice to get you started
Get guitar lesson or piano lessons. Get voice lessons; I know they
offer all that stuff there at ORU. Get plugged in to a local church
here in Tulsa and just serve.
Get on a local worship team. Be involved in the worship, talk to
the worship leader, develop a relationship with the worship leader.
That's kinda what I did with Darrell Evans. [He] was the worship
leader at Open Bible Fellowship back in '96. This was before he
was famous-nobody really knew about him, but I heard that they had
this great worship leader at Open Bible. So I went, and actually,
I was doing two of Darrell Evans' songs already and they were two
of my favorite songs.
So I went [to an OBF service] and just enjoyed it, so I walked up
to him and said, "Hey, let me take you to lunch!'" So we went out
to lunch and got to know one another, developed a friendship and
then I got to see the whole process of when Integrity asked him
to do the "Let the River Flow" CD that they did at Open Bible Fellowship
in '97.
I learned a lot from Darrell Evans just by our friendship, so I
would encourage young guys and girls who want to be worship leaders
to find other worship leaders that they like their style and the
songs they do, they like the groove that's coming out of what they're
doing and get to know them. Take them to lunch, get involved in
the worship team, say, "Hey, can I serve? Can I get water for the
worship team? Do you need an acoustic guitar player?" and then as
that worship leader sees you serving, God will open up doors.
