Oxygen bar opens in Tulsa
By Lindsey Michael Miller

An oxygen bar, O2, has opened here in Tulsa. Scott Hillsbury, from Sand Springs, is the founder/owner/operator of the establishment. First starting out in Calif., these trendy shops have been opening up all around the country, the closest site being in Dallas. The Tulsa location has been open since March 6 and attracts people of all ages. It is a completely smoke-free establishment, and they also sell drinks (non-alcoholic) and provide a homey atmosphere with sofas, beanbag chairs and tables, much like a coffee shop would. They have 16 different aromas to choose from, such as tropical fruits, eucalyptus, mint mixtures and even chocolate.

The thing that most students want to know is, "So what exactly is an oxygen bar anyway?" It is both healthy and entirely natural. The average oxygen content of air is between 21-22 percent; the rest is nitrogen, argon and a few other things. And 90 percent of the body's energy comes from oxygen. The rest is from food. This oxygen bar system provides the body with 95 percent oxygen, taken straight out of the air and filtered through aromas designed to uplift and soothe. It's no drug, and it's far better for you than coffee. It's safer for you than coffee, too-Jess Markey, a Certified Nurse's Assistant (C.N.A.) at Hillcrest Specialty Hospital, reports that administering oxygen in this way produces no harmful effects to the body.

Often it's referred to as "oxygen therapy" because it is a type of therapy. After 20 minutes the body is cleansed, refreshed and energized. The proported benefits include: relief from migraine headaches, replenishment of the body's energy level, better performance and efficiency in the digestion system, filtering of toxins from the blood, improvement of hair and skin conditions, improvement in stamina and clarity of the mind.

The studies on aromatherapy show that specific smells produce physical effects within the body. Certain aromas signal the part of the brain that controls emotions, and the scented oils also stimulate various psychological and physiological responses. Essential oils are used to recharge, rejuvenate, relax, soothe and treat ailments.

It's only a dollar a minute, and 20 minutes is the maximum time limit. So give it a try, especially if you've been having sinus or migraine problems. After all, it's a fun experience, a new cool trend and it's very healthy for your body.

O2 is located at 3346 S. Peoria, near 34th St. in Brookside. They are open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
