It's pretty difficult for some of us to suppress a snigger and smile when we hear then names of some of the boats thant people float ... especially if you are off the coast of places like the United states! It alsmost seesm as though the core function of the USCG is to keep rescuing these ... uh... bum boats whichi manage to perpetually either run out of oil and stay adrift, or run aground!! Of course, the CG manages to rescue them after making lengthy announcements on vhf channel 16 (So much for blocking the channel!!)
Here are the names of some rather odd, but common names of boats and ships -
Sweet Aunt Sara, Crazy Horse, Liquid joy, Cheers!, Tia Maria, Shark chum, Abracadabra, june bug, Odd a sea, barracuda, Buttercup, Strum, Rock and roll, Fantasea, Sea Ya, Lazy daze, Luna sea, Happy ours, Hakuna matata, Miss Behavin', AWOL, Sea duction.....
As per Time magazine, the 10 most popular boat names are Odyssey, Serenity, Obsession, Sea Breeze, Osprey, Escape, Wet Dream, Therapy, Liquid Asset, Solitude
An old nautical superstition - Old World sailors feared it was bad luck to sail aboard a ship with a six-letter name
PS - For all those who objected to the use of the phrase "bum boat" - I stand corrected - a Bum boat IS actually a peddler's boat, filled with assorted merchandise. Its name is a corruption of "Boom-Boat," because these small craft were permitted to moor to a ship's boat-booms while disposing of their wares.
but perhaps a bum boat is also a boat with a bum as a skipper??!!
Where do you want to go next?
