John was born in 1740 in Baltimore, Maryland to Alexis Lemmon and Martha (?) when his father was about 21. His father emigrated from either Ireland or England, his mother probably from Scotland or Ireland. John was the oldest of six siblings, all of whom were born in Baltimore.

John and Sarah married March 6, 1760 in Baltimore when he was 19 and she was 23. They moved soon afterwards to Hampshire, Virginia where their first five children were born. In 1774 they moved back to Baltimore, and, after two more children, left in 1778 for Harrison, Indiana where John Jr. and his younger brother were born. The children were: Lemuel (1761-1836), Martha (1764-?), Hannah (1768-?), Alex (1768-?), Thomas (1770-1854), Benjamin (1774-?), Eleanor (1777-before 1836), John (1778-?), and Charles (1780 or 86-?). All the children were born in Burke County except Priscilla, born in Rowan, North Carolina. We don't know when Mary died, but Robert died in 1790 at about the age of 75.
