A note on the translation: The German phrase “Da haben wir den Salat” actually means “Now we’re in a fine mess” or “pretty pickle”. But there is also a pun, as “Salat” means, yes, “salad”. You can often get leaves (usually of the lettuce variety) in salad. So to keep the pun intact, I have used “salad days” for my English rendition, which implies carefree and youthful fun.
