Book Review
Ethan of Athos
By Lois McMaster Bujold
Dr. Ethan Urquhart is an obstetrician on a planet that has no women.
Despite this fact, Dr. Urquhart helps deliver a number of babies every day thanks to the uterine replicator.
This nifty device is a mechanical womb that nurtures the fertilized egg until it is ready for birth.
A full term test tube baby, if you will. (Where were these uterine replicators when I needed one?)
But don't worry ladies, we aren't completely out of the picture yet. They still need to get the ovarian samples from somewhere.
Unfortunately, as the story goes, the most recent samples purchased (sight unseen) are sabotaged and the genetic future of the planet Athos is endangered.
Ethan "volunteers" to leave the safety of the planet and to face unknown dangers to obtain new samples to help the Athosians survive.
And of course the most deadly threat to his sanity and his soul is that most terrible of creatures, woman.
On his quest to locate or replace the missing samples, Ethan becomes caught up in a mysterious scheme involving genetic engineering.
He discovers that there are a number of people all trying to locate the ovarian samples that were suppose to have gone to Athos.
What was so special about those samples, why does everyone want them, who is Terrence Cee and why, oh why, does poor Ethan keep running into women wherever he goes?
This is another excellent book from Lois McMaster Bujold who is a delightful storyteller. If you have not read any of Bujold's other books about Barrayar and Lord Miles Vorkorsgian, I highly recommend you do.
