Scott County (1-0) vs. Lexington Catholic (0-1)

Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals defeated Boone County last week by a score of 23-14.  The Cardinals offense was led by FB Jose Smith and RB Josh WallsWalls will miss this week due to an injury but Scott County may have the services of RB Anthony Sandoval on a limited basis.

Lexington Catholic lost their home opener 31-7 to Indianapolis Bishop Chatard.  RB Greg Raglin was limited last week due to an ankle injury.  The Knights offense is expected to be led by QB Nic Ward, RBs Devon Williams and Greg Raglin, and TE Daniel Vogelsang.

Lexington Catholic led 16-3 after three quarters and held on down the stretch to defeat Scott County 16-10.  Ryne Least opened the scoring for Lexington Catholic in the second quarter with a 53 yard punt return.  The Knights held a 7-3 lead at halftime.  The third quarter was played under steady rain showers.

Lexington Catholic recovered a fumble on Scott County's first possession in the second half, leading to an 8 yard TD pass from Nic Ward to Lee RamseyDevon Williams returned a Scott County punt 52 yards to the Scott County 2 yard line.  Lexington Catholic settled for a 25 yard field goal by Lane Pumphrey to lead 16-3.  Anthony Sandoval pulled the Cardinals to within seven, 16-9, on an 11 yard run with 10:39 left in the game.  Jay Willmott kicked the extra point and Scott County trailed 16-10.

Scott County moved the ball to the Lexington Catholic 10 yard line in the closing seconds but on a third-and-six play, QB Cory Cronin was tackled by Devon Williams for a three yard loss.  The Cardinals managed to get off a snap but a delay of game penalty was declined and Lexington Catholic escaped with a nail-biter for the home fans.

Lexington Catholic recorded eight first downs and 104 yards of total offense.  The Knights were penalized nine times for 60 yards and lost two fumbles.  Scott County recorded 12 first downs and 190 yards of total offense.  The Cardinals were penalized three times for 28 yards and lost a fumble.  Both teams played well defensively but Scott County's special teams gave up two long punt returns leading to 10 Lexington Catholic points.

Devon Williams led the Lexington Catholic ground game with 33 yards on eight carries.  Nic Ward completed eight of 19 passes for 55 yards and one touchdown.  Daniel Vogelsang caught three passes for 13 yards.  Matt Bean led the defense with eight unassisted tackles.  Two of his tackles accounted for losses totalling 12 yards.  Kevin Ebbit added seven solo and two assisted tackles. 

Jose Smith led the Scott County ground game with 136 yards on 27 carries.  Anthony Sandoval carried the ball four times for 23 yards and a touchdown.  Cory Cronin completed two of 12 passes for 35 yards.  Michael Weeks caught two passes for 14 yards.  Cory Cronin led the Cardinal defense with five solo and one assisted tackles.  Sean Higgins added four solo and two assisted tackles.  2.5 of Higgins' tackles accounted for losses totalling 12 yards.
