MORE NEWS ABOUT FILM MUSIC (04 January 2010)

Xiaolu Guo’s She, a Chinese, with an original score by John Parish, has been on the festival circuit, winning The Golden Leopard (best film) at the Locarno Film Festival.

The film, description following courtesy Toronto Film Festival, will be released early 2010 in the UK, Germany & Austria. Further territories to be announced shortly.

She, a Chinese is a rock 'n' roll odyssey that follows a young woman on a soul-searching journey. The film stands in stark contrast with its title, which would seem to define the cultural and ethnic origins of its protagonist. But this is a truly nationless movie, addressing contemporary issues that trespass borders and blur socio-political lines into a globalized world of shared values and collective problems. Challenging the visual style of traditional Chinese cinema, novelist and filmmaker Guo Xiaolu focuses her subtle narrative on an enigmatic woman who creates her own path. Framed in chapters and often using short, lyrical captions or silent, beautifully composed snapshots of landscapes, the film is an unpretentiously sophisticated hybrid of documentary, creative writing, visual poetry and cinema.

Alternately accompanied by the soft musical score of John Parish and the punk-rock songs of Chinese bands like X.T.X & Cold Blooded Animal, Guo's graceful images are charged with an instinctive, tactile elegance. Romantic, at times melancholic, but always realistic, this is a story about survival and the art of leaving and longing. She, a Chinese glows with powerful inner charm and confirms Guo as one of the brightest talents of contemporary world cinema.

John has also contributed some original music to Sebastien Lifshitz’s new film, Plein sud, due for French release on December 30th. Follow this link to see the trailor… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0tuB95gY_k

NOWHERE MAN SELECTED IN VENICE (08 August 2008)

Patrice Toye's film Nowhere Man, with an original score written and performed by John, has been selected for the 65th Venice International Film Festival which opens on August 27th 2008. It will be shown as part of the Giornate Degli Autori - Venice Days section.

We can also announce that Flood has completed mixing the new John Parish & Polly Jean Harvey album, which is due for release early 2009.

JUNE 2008 NEWS (06 June 2008)

Various bits of news for this month's entry. First of all, the new album co-written by John and Polly Jean Harvey has been recorded and is being mixed by Flood this month. The release date should be announced soon. The album comprises ten songs and one instrumental (music written by John and words by Polly). Other musicians featured are Eric Drew Feldman, Carla Azar and Giovanni Ferrario.

Also, we had previously mentioned Waltz, a Dutch seven-part circus drama directed by Norbert ter Hall for which John wrote the soundtrack. It is being broadcast for the second time over seven consecutive nights from the 9th to the 15th June at 23:50 on NL2. The programme is also available as a DVD box set (in Dutch).

Talking about soundtracks, Patrice Toye's new film, now titled Nowhere Man and featuring music written and performed by John, is due for release on 20th August 2008.

Several records produced by John came out recently. First of all, This Is The Kit's lovely album Krülle Bol is now out on Microbe Records. Storia di Caino by Cesare Basile is out on Urtovox and Afterhours' I Milanesi Ammazzano il Sabato, for which John produced four tracks, is out on Universal.

THRILL JOCKEY 15TH ANNIVERSARY BOX SET (11 January 2008)

Thrill Jockey have just released a 15th anniversary 7" box set called Plum, which contains ten 7" vinyl singles with Thrill Jockey artists covering songs by other Thrill Jockey artists. Howe Gelb does a cover of John's song Boxers from Once Upon A Little Time. Together with Marta Collica and Jean-Marc Butty, John covered Califone's Vampiring Again, from their album Quicksand/Cradlesnakes. The song is currently available on Marta Collica's MySpace page.

NEW FILM SOUNDTRACK (15 November 2007)

Eight years after Rosie, John is collaborating again with director Patrice Toye: he is composing the soundtrack to her new film The Spring Ritual. The script written by Patrice Toye won the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award in 2006. The film is currently in post-production and should be released sometime in 2008.

PICTURES FROM PARIS + TOM BROSSEAU (13 November 2007)

A few days after John's appearances in France, we have updated the gallery section with pictures from the gig that took place in Paris at the Divan du Monde. Cathimini from Abus Dangereux magazine, Vinciane Verguethen from Le Cargo and Alain Grodard from www.le-hiboo.com were also kind enough to lend us some of their own pictures. You can access them from the gallery page or from those pages:

04.11 - Mestre (Venezia), Italy
07.11 - All Tomorrow's Parties, Minehead, UK

NEW COLLABORATION WITH POLLY HARVEY (17 September 2007)

Just a few days before the release of White Chalk, the breathtaking new album by PJ Harvey, which was co-produced by John as well as Flood, we are pleased to announce that John and Polly Harvey are about to collaborate again on a new record. A follow-up to the fantastic 1996 album Dance Hall At Louse Point should be released sometime in 2008, and the recording will probably start around January. We can assume that the concept will be similar to what they did on Dance Hall At Louse Point (music written and performed by John, lyrics written and sung by Polly).

We will keep you informed about this project as more details are announced. In the meantime, be sure not to miss White Chalk. It's an outstanding piece of work, definitely one of the finest PJ Harvey records.

TWO MORE DATES IN NOVEMBER (26 July 2007)

John and the band will also be performing in France in November. Two dates have been announced:

08.11 - Divan du Monde, Paris
09.11 - Festival des Musiques Volantes, Metz

The evening at the Divan du Monde is the first in a series of events entitled Welcome To The 21 Love Hotel, hosted by French band 21 Love Hotel with various guests and friends. This first gig will feature John and his band as well as Poney Express, 21 Love Hotel themselves and a DJ set by Kid Loco. This event should take place monthly at the Divan du Monde. TOM BROSSEAU AND THIS IS THE KIT (02 May 2007)
Having returned from the April tour, John is currently producing a record for
Tom Brosseau, to be released on Fat Cat. The record should be out sometime in autumn (more details will be posted here as soon as they're available). After which he should be working on an album by This Is The Kit. This is a project by Kate Stables, who notably plays with Morning Star (with whom John has also worked before). In the meantime, you can hear some of their songs on their MySpace pages:
http://www.myspace.com/tombrosseau
http://www.myspace.com/thisisthekit

SOLO RECORD BY MARTA COLLICA (26 April 2007)
One record we somehow failed to mention, but strongly recommend, is Marta Collica's solo album Pretty And Unsafe which was released in 2006. Marta plays keyboard and also provides vocals in John's band. The record features guest appearances by Hugo Race (with whom Marta also works under the name
Sepiatone), Giorgia Poli and Cesare Basile. John also mixed several tracks and played guitar and mellotron on some of them. But the songs, both atmospheric and intimate, are mostly built around the voice and piano. You can hear some extracts on Marta's MySpace page. This record definitely deserves your attention.

LIVE PICTURES FROM THE APRIL TOUR (22 April 2007)
The April tour ended last night in France, in Angoulême, where I was lucky enough to attend the show (definitely one of the best I've seen with this lineup). A selection of pictures from that show is now available in the
gallery section.

Also, John is currently writing and recording the score to New York director Jennifer Houlton's first full-length feature film Water at Honorsound in Bristol.

PICTURES FROM THE PARIS GIG (18 Jan. 2003)
Stéphanie Hue, who attended John's gig in Paris last November, was kind enough to let us use the pictures she took of the band. A total of eleven pictures which you can see in our
gallery section, together with the setlist from the gig. Some of those pictures are a little blurry, which gives them an interesting eerie quality (notably a picture of a double-headed John).

The gig was a success, as were the other dates according to about anyone who attended them (there is a review of the Berlin gig by Oliver Gray on John's officiel website), as well as enthusiastic mails from fans on the message board). The band line-up was perfect, with the nine members complementing each other perfectly, and the music beautiful and impressive as ever. Numbers like Burn Rubber Barons from the Rosie soundtrack, The Florida Recount and especially How Animals Move reached an amazing level of intensity. The set also included a fantastic cover of David Bowie's Speed of Life.

BAND LINE-UP (10 Oct. 2002)
Here is the confirmed band line-up for John's forthcoming European tour (see dates below):

Jeremy Hogg - Slide Guitar
Clare Mactaggart - Violin
Jesse Morningstar - Treated Violin & Glock
John Parish - Guitar, Rhodes

Ben Shillabeer - Guitar, Keys
Adrian Utley - Guitar

'HOW ANIMALS MOVE' IS OUT (20 Sept. 2002)
John's long-awaited solo record How Animals Move (Thrill Jockey) is out at last. This 13-track album consists mostly in instrumentals, with the exception of: Shrunken Man (from The The's Shrunken Man EP, vocals by Does De Wolf), Stable Life (vocals by David Donahue/Aaron Dewey), Airplane Blues (featuring Polly Harvey)... and another track built around a walkman recording of a bunch of Spanish girls singing on the beach.

Other guest musicians include Howe Gelb, Eric Drew Feldman, Adrian Utley, Jesse Morningstar, Pat MacDonald, Clare MacTaggart Will Gregory and Jeremy Hogg.

How Animals Move is a perfect follow-up to John's previous projects such as the Rosie soundtrack or the 1996 album Dance Hall at Louse Point written and recorded with Polly Harvey. It shares with them the same sense of invention, the same occasional bluesy feeling (especially on the fantastic Westward Airways). There is also a similar blend of textures and atmospheres, as well as a subtle way to play with the listener's emotions (the best example of that being the title track). This is the kind of record that gradually gets under your skin before you can even realize you are becoming addicted. Be sure not to miss it.

OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE + BELGIAN RADIO SHOW
(13 June 2002)

It is now confirmed that John's solo album How Animals Move will be released on September 10th through Thrill Jockey Records. It features contributions from Jim Barr, Adrian Utley, Eric Drew Feldman and Polly Harvey. The release will be followed by a European tour (we will post the dates as soon as they are confirmed).
Also, starting from June 17th, John is to be guest "curator/DJ" on the Belgian radio show Mixtuur (on Radio Klara). He will get to play about 45 minutes of music from his record collection, every night for a week. More information (in Dutch) available on the
Radio Klara website.

INTERVIEW ON GERMAN EELS SITE (04 Dec. 2001)
A brand new interview of John is available on
http://www.eelsfan.de, a German website dedicated to Eels. Christina Hemmen and Andreas Braun interviewed John before the Eels gig in Frankfurt on 12th November 2001. The interview is available in German and in English, and deals with such things as John's collaboration with the band, his reputation as a "mad scientist" and the gig they did in Glasgow wearing Scottish costumes. There are also some photographs available on the page.

SPOTLIGHT ON MORNING STAR AND DOMINIQUE A (04 Dec. 2001)
Both these records (featuring and produced by John) have been out for a little while now, but they definitely deserve your attention.

My Place In The Dust, by Morning Star, is a haunting record, quiet and atmospheric, which reveals a talented songwriter named Jesse D. Vernon. This is not John's first collaboration with Jesse, who was notably one of the eleven musicians who recently played with John onstage. My Place In The Dust is available through Sink and Stove Records (and also through Microbe Records in France). More information about Morning Star is available here.

On a more energetic tone, Auguri (Labels) is a new album by French songwriter Dominique A. Auguri was recorded in Monnow Valley in Wales and was engineered by Head. Other musicians involved on this record included Aaron Dewey, Olivier Mellano, Sacha Toorop and, well, the birds of Monnow Valley (according to the inner sleeve). The official page for Dominique A on the Labels website features information (in French) about his previous releases and also provides access to video clips and extracts from the album.

A GIG WITH HOWE GELB (21 Sept. 2001)
It seems that John will be touring with Eels until the end of the year, and until then it is very likely that all the news posted here will be about the releases of albums he has produced. The Eels record Souljacker, including some songs co-written by John, is already available, and Dominique A's album Auguri should be out in October.

Meanwhile, John will be one of the special guests appearing at a gig hosted by Giant Sand frontman Howe Gelb. As we are writing this, we are still waiting for a confirmation about the date and venue, but it seems that the gig will take place on November 3rd at The Barbican, London. The other announced guests are John Convertino (Giant Sand, Calexico), Evan Dando, Kristin Hersh, Kurt Wagner (Lambchop) and Vic Chesnutt. They will all be playing their own material.

(Many thanks to Simon Van der Linde and Cathimini for sharing the information.)

EELS AND OTHER ANIMALS (10 July 2001)
How Animals Move, John’s forthcoming solo album, is almost finished, even though there are still some mixes to complete. Although no release date has been announced yet, John hopes to release it after he finishes touring with Eels. The new Eels album Souljacker, co-produced by John and E, features seven songs co-written by John. It should be released on Dreamworks in September. A video for the first single Souljacker Part 1 has just been shot in Berlin with Wim Wenders directing. You can check out the band’s
official website for tour dates and other information.

NEW SPARKLEHORSE ALBUM + DOMINIQUE A.
(10 July 2001)

Be sure not to miss Sparklehorse’s fantastic third album It’s a Wonderful Life (on Capitol Records). John co-produced two songs on which he also played, Piano Fire and Eyepennies, both featuring vocals by Polly Harvey. He also worked on a third song available on the band’s Gold Day EP. Other guest appearances on this album include Tom Waits, Nina Persson from The Cardigans and Portishead member Adrian Utley. More information available on the
Sparklehorse website.

Among other recent collaborations, John has just finished producing the forthcoming album by French artist Dominique A. The record is due for release on Labels in October.

TOUR DATES CONFIRMED (22 February 2001)
John and his eleven-piece band (the same band that opened for The The last year -- see below for more details) will be touring at the end of March. The following dates have already been confirmed:

March 26 - Bristol, Cube Cinema (UK)
March 27 - Portsmouth, Wedgewood Rooms (UK)
March 29 - London, Dingwalls (UK)
March 31 - Haarlem(Netherlands)

John Parish is headling at all shows except London where the headline act is 16 Horsepower.
Howe Gelb will be on the bill at all shows except for Brussels.

NEW ALBUM FOR 2001 (22 February 2001)
As we are writing this, John is halfway through recording a solo album. The record has a provisional title of How Animals Move and some of the new material has been recorded with his new 11-piece band. This will be John's first solo recording since the release of the Rosie soundtrack.
There has also been news of forthcoming collaborations with Giant Sand frontman Howe Gelb as well as with Eels. More details to follow.

TOUR NEWS + THE THE
Following their collaboration on the Shrunken Man EP, John will be opening for The The on December 10th. The gig will take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London and will be part of John's three-date tour with his new band. The other two gigs will take place in Bristol (Cube Cinema, Dec 7th) and Yeovil (Yeovil College, Dec 8th). The band's line-up has been announced as follows:

John Parish - guitar
Jeremy Hogg - slide guitar
Clare MacTaggart - violin, mandolin
Adrian Utley - guitar
Tammy Payne - drums
Jim Barr - acoustic & electric bass
Jesse Morningstar - violin
Aaron Dewey - cornet
Ben Shillabeer - guitar/keys
Wayne Higgins - guitar/keys
Stuart Bell - mandolin/bass/drums/guitar

Jeremy Hogg, Clare McTaggart and Adrian Utley took part in the brief tour that followed the release of the Rosie soundtrack in 1999. Ben Shillabeer (member of Soeza and Fall Project) also runs Sink and Stove Records, the label which released the aforementioned compilation The Hospital Radio Request List.

SPARKLEHORSE AND OTHER COLLABORATIONS
John has just returned from Barcelona where he produced some tracks for the forthcoming Sparklehorse album. Guest musicians on the session included Polly Harvey and Portishead member Adrian Utley.
Other recent collaborations include a track for a compilation called The Hospital Radio Request List which is the second record released by
Sink and Stove. The album also features tracks by Fall Project, Soeza, White Hotel, Knife & Fork (Eric Drew Feldman's project), Terry Edwards and the Scapegoats and Christmas (new project by Spleen members Rob Ellis and Tim Farthing.)
Talking of Christmas and White Hotel, they have just released a split single on Morpheus Records, entitled Porcelain/The Secret Architecture. The White Hotel track (Porcelain) was produced by John at State of Art studio earlier this year.

A BOOK CALLED VOLUME
Sarsen Press have just released Oliver Gray's book Volume which notably contains a few stories about Thieves Like Us, Automatic Dlamini and PJ Harvey. Subtitled 'A cautionary tale of rock and roll obsession', Volume is an autobiographic tale about Oliver Gray's relationship with music through various experiences. He was notably the manager of Thieves Like Us and was also involved in the releasing of Automatic Dlamini's album From a Diva to a Diver. It's a gripping and very funny book which should definitely ring a bell if you have ever been a music fan. More information about Volume is available on the
Revilo website.

NEW RELEASES: BETTIE SERVEERT AND THOU
The new album by Dutch band Bettie Serveert, which John produced in Amsterdam, will soon be available: Private Suit will be released on May 29th through PIAS. The first single White Tales is already out.
Also available is the album recorded by Belgian band Thou. The LP entitled Put Us in Tune, containing 15 tracks produced and mixed by John, is also being released through PIAS.

VARIATIONS ON A SHRUNKEN MAN
The The's new EP Shrunken Man (Interpretations: Issue 1) is now available in the UK. The EP contains four interpretations of the same song by various artists. The first track is the original song performed by The The, as it appears on the album Naked Self. Track number two is an interpretation by Belgian band Daau. Track three is performed by John assisted by Does De Wolf (vocal) and Mike Henning (flugelhorn). The final interpretation is by New York artist Foetus. The EP is released through Nothing Records in the UK.

GIANT SAND AT LAST + FALL PROJECT
After having been postponed regularly due to some problems with the record company,
Giant Sand's new album Chore of Enchantment is finally available in Europe and in the United States on Thrill Jockey. The album was produced by John (Tucson sessions), Jim Dickinson (Memphis sessions) and Kevin Salem (New York sessions). Head was also involved in the recording. The sleeve pictures include one of John and Michelle Henning's wedding, taken by Maria Mochnacz (as well as one of Maria herself, taken on the same day).
John has also collaborated with Ben Shillabeer and Stuart Bell who have just released a double album under the name Fall Project (on Sink and Stove Records) - he played the drums on a couple of tracks.

WHITE HOTEL SINGLE
Before the end of January, John will go into the studio with Ken Low, Colleen Browne and Jean-Marc Butty from White Hotel to produce a track which will be released as a single. The recording will take place at State of Art in Bristol and Head will be engineering. The song is meant to be part of a split single also featuring Christmas (Rob Ellis and Tim Farthing's new project). If you want to find out more about White Hotel and their fantastic debut album First Water, information is available on their
website.

GIANT SAND ALBUM FINALLY RELEASED
It seems that the Giant Sand album to which John collaborated as a producer, Chore of Enchantment, will finally come out in the spring on Thrill Jockey. Another forthcoming Giant Sand album called The Rock Opera Years (official bootleg vol.2) will contain all the other pieces from the session that John and Head did in Tucson back in January and February 98.

EXPERIMENTAL POP BAND PROJECT
John has just finished mastering the Experimental Pop Band project we mentioned previously. The Bristol-based band should release a single around March or April on City Slang, followed by the release of their album, then by a second single around September.

GUEST APPEARANCE IN ANTWERP
On Jan 29, John will be guesting with Belgian band Thou at de Nachten in Antwerp. It seems that The The may be playing as well, but the news still have to be confirmed. As we are writing this, no date has been decided for the release of the Shrunken Man EP for which John collaborated with The The.

EELS + EXPERIMENTAL POP BAND
John recently spent some time in Los Angeles working on a future project with American band Eels, but it seems that nothing will be released before a little while. Another recent collaboration was with Bristol-based Experimental Pop Band. They have recorded a few tracks (produced by John) for the band's next album and will spend more time recording and mixing at State Of Art studio. The album should be released next year on City Slang.

ONE TRACK WITH THE THE
The next single by The The, Shrunken Man, features a collaboration with John. The first version of the song is by The The, followed by three other interpretations, one of which is by John. The EP will probably be out in early 2000.

A BELGIAN BAND CALLED THOU
John recently collaborated with a band from Ghent named THOU. Their second album was recorded at State Of Art studio in Bristol and should be released early next year.

HAZEL WINTER COLLABORATION
John has spent some time producing a few tracks for Hazel Winter's forthcoming album Put Away The Sharp Knives in Bristol. He also played bass and drums. Adrian Utley from Portishead (who was involved in the series of live performances of the Rosie soundtrack) also plays some guitar on these tracks. More information on Hazel Winter can be found on her official
website.

IMPROV THEATRE GIG
This may not be fresh news, but you might like to hear that John Parish and Polly Harvey did a show together on 1st April 1999 at the Improv Theatre in London. This was part of a programme also including Echo & The Bunnymen, aimed at celebrating John Peel's 60th birthday. The set included mainly PJ Harvey oldies such as Dry, Man-Size, Legs and 50Ft Queenie. John and Polly were alone on stage, with only drums, guitars and vocals. As anyone who has heard the radio recording (and that includes us) will confirm, the result was simply breathtaking.

HOWE GELB
It has been reported that John took part in a Howe Gelb show in Bristol to back Gelb on a few songs. Hardly surprising given that John and Howe collaborated last year on a forthcoming Giant Sand album produced by John.

GERMAN AWARD FOR ROSIE
While John was in Barcelona producing a record for Pat McDonald, his soundtrack for the film
Rosie won the special Jury Prize at the Bonn International Film Music Biennale. So he had to go to Bonn on his way home from Spain to pick up the award at the "Gala Ceremony".
