Jackson Square

In the heart of the French Quarter

In the foreground are carriages waiting to take you for a ride around the Quarter, and behind the square is St.Louis Cathedral, standing guard.

On either side of the cathedral are the Presbytere, which was originally the residence for the priests of St. Louis Cathedral, and the Cabildo, built in 1795 to house the Spanish colonial city council. They are both now museums, and are open daily.

Inside the park, it's quiet and peaceful, a good place to kick back and relax and get a good look at the statue of General Andrew Jackson astride his horse in the middle of the park.

All around the outside of the square it's a different story, there are street performers everywhere, jazz bands, tap dancers, one man bands, jugglers, and of course, the dreaded mimes!

Up against the outside of the fence all around the square are the artists ~ you can see their work displayed and even have a portrait done in chalks on the spot.

And there are shops on both sides of the square, where you can find treasures ~ from the tacky to the sublime. Two "must sees" are The Kite Shop, where kites of all kinds are hanging from the 14 foot ceiling, and Rue Madeline's, a little French bakery shop and luncheonette ~ fresh breads and desserts out of this world.
