Over a Century of Tradition and Excellence
Atlanta School History
The 1870's brought changes to Atlanta, Louisiana, one being a Male And Female Institute . This school kept us on the map during the great exodus. The present modern high school stands where the old college once stood. The Atlanta School began with a 2 story frame building with one long room on the ground floor equipped with wooden benches for seats. The upper story was one large room and one small room which was used for music. This Institute was placed under the control of the State Superintendent of Education and State Board of Education, and represented by a legally incorporated Board of Trustees by an act of the Legislature April of 1886. In 1889 when Joseph Paul was appointed principal there were 150 pupils enrolled. Opening in September, 1890 session, with a principal and two teachers. A thorough business and classical education could be obtained . Atlanta was the third high school as early as 1908 but was not accredited as a state approved high school until the end of the 1916-17 session when two graduated, Velma McElroy and Cassius Ferguson. The 1900 's saw a decline of enrollment , but by 1911 it had grown enough there was a need for a new two-story building. It was one of the best and most beautiful of its kind. In 1929 another all purpose one story brick building was constructed which is still in use today , at a cost of 30,0000 dollars. By the year of 1983 we have had near 50 principals, 3 of these have been women. The first was Mrs.Paymont 1896-97 and then Mattie Dorman in 1905-07. Our present principal is Mrs.Barbara Rudd for the session of 1999-2000. We wish her the best.
