Type 42 Destroyers
The Type 42 Destroyer is the primary mode of air defence for the Royal Navy. With the removal of the Sea Dart SAM (Surface to Air Missile) system from the Navys aircraft carriers also means that the type 42 is also relied upon to fill that task. There are currently 12 of the 14 commisioned Type 42s in service with the Navy all of which were introduced in 3 seperate batches of 6, 4 and 4 (2 batch 1 were sunk during the Falklands war). Batch 1 and 2 are almost identical with few modifications made. Batch 3 however is a stretched version which allows for further stability in the ship and also extended storage space. Here is a list of all Type 42s, click on an underlined name to see image.

With the current destroyer fleet ageing the navy is now constructing a replacement destroyer, the type 45. The first is due to enter service around 2007 and will be a welcome sight for an old and outdated fleet.
