Science Fiction/Fact?
I had just put the last item in my shopping cart, rolled it to the check-out line; I noticed a commotion at the front of the store. The security officers were arresting an older man, probably in his thirties. He was un-shaven, wearing old, torn, dirty clothes: he must be one of those bums I keep hearing about on TV. He keeps screaming something about his family. I can't quite make out what he's saying over all the noise. The lady in front of me says, 'He's one of those religious fanatics. There's still a few of them that haven't been caught. My, they're such a pain. Why make such a fuss over this new check-out system? I love it. It's so convenient. And passing your right hand over the scanner only takes a split second'. All I could do is nod; by now my head is really hurting, so I think I'll go to the Pharmacy. I hate it when the clerk runs that wand over my forehead; I always get the feeling that I'm doing something bad, like when I was a kid and I did things though I knew they were wrong. My doctor tells me it's just a mild side-effect that everyone has after the microchip implant in the forehead. 'Have a nice day', the computer peeps. Out of habit I say, 'You too'. It wasn't long ago that clerks stood where the computer sits. I mutter, 'Oh well, this is the new age. See you later product processor model IBM666'.
