Gefax Setup Version 0.4
Accessing The Properties Dialog Box
The setup dialog box will automatically open the first time you start gefax. After this you can open the properties dialog box using two methods.
From the menu bar
Select view -> Preferences
From the main toolbar
Select the setup button on the main toolbar
Setting The Options
Once the setup dialog box has been opened, you will need to configure settings on all tabs of the notebook. All settings are described in the following sections.
WARNING Read the following sections before attempting to use gefax as incorrect configuration may result in crashing your computer or losing files!.
The General tab
View all files
Allows you to view all files in the main window even if the file format cannot be faxed.
The text colour of these rows will be red to allow you to determine which files may or
may not be selected.
View selected files in order
This option will move all selected files to the top of the file list in the fax order. All remaining files will be listed in alphabetical order.
Automatically print recieved fax
This option will automatically print the fax to your printer as specified in the printer setup(below). Both polled and received faximilies will be printed immediately after they are received.
Warn before removing fax numbers
A warning dialog will be displayed to confirm removing a number from the fax number list when this option is selected.
Received Files Directory
Directory where received files are stored when
polling a fax or receiving a fax. You can use any directory you wish but
you must have permission to write files to this directory.
Bin Directory
Location of gefax's Trash. I use a directory
called ~/Fax/Bin/. You can use any directory you wish but you must
have permission to write files to this directory. Keep in mind that when
you clear the Trash, all files in this directory will be deleted.
Temp Directory
Directory where the fax pages are created during sending
a fax. The default directory will be automatically created by gefax if it
does not exist. You will also need permission to create files in this directory
and the directory must not contain any other directories. All files
are deleted (if any) before and after faxes are sent. I don't reccommend
changing this unless you are not the only user on your system sending faxes
with gefax. (The pages are created before Efax© checks for a lock file).
The Modem Tab
Device
Select the device or "port" to which your fax modem is connected.
It is reccommended that you use the same device for all applications which
will be using the modem. The device selected here will be locked (see lock
type) while sending, polling and receiving faxes.
Class
Select the correct fax modem class as supported by your
modem. Some modems can manage CLASS 1 or CLASS 2 operation for example,
but work better in CLASS 1 mode (my Hayes Accura 33.6). So if you are having
problems try all supported classes.
Volume
Sets the modem volume while sending and receiving faxes.
Bitrate
gefax currently passes this option while sending and
receiving faxes (should be only needed when receiving?). Consult
your modem user manual for the supported bitrate.
Dial Type
This option sets the dial type to tone or pulse dialing.
Select the correct dial type for your area.
Modem Command Delay
This is the delay time between initilization commands
being sent to the modem. If you experience modem lockups try selecting a
longer delay.
Init String
This is the modem initialization string used before
dialing(I think?) See the efax© man page for more options.
Reset after String
This is the command that resets the modem after sending faxes.
Try the longer command if your modem does not reset correctly.
Lock Type:
There are 4 options in the dropdown list HELP?
- none: Don't use any locking
- modern: eg /var/lock/LCK..$DEV
- older style: eg /usr/spool/uucp/LCK..$DEV
- binary: eg #/usr/spool/uucp/LCK..$DEV
Additional settings
If you have one of the modems in the drop down list you will need to set this option.
see man efax© for more details
The Fax Tab
Use Cover Page
If you wish to use a cover page for all sent faxes select this option.
The cover page must be a Tiffg3 file. The efax© man page describes how to create tiffg3 files from a postscript, text, or tiff image file.
Tiffg3 cover page file
Where the cover page is located
Page Header Text
This will appear at the top of every page sent. The first %d will be converted to the page number and the next %d the total number of pages.
Modify the default to suit your needs. No -h switch is needed for version 0.2-4.
Fax Station Identification Number
This is the number that your fax station identifies itself by when sending, receiving and polling faxes.
It should be in International format and may be preceeded by a +. Version 0.2-4 no longer requires the -l switch.
The Printing Tab
Print command
The print command that you would usually use on the command line. You can specify a particular printer spool that is installed on your system in the normal fashion.
E.g I use "lpr -Pecono" to print in economy mode with a HP Deskjet printer setup on my system.
Printing Option
Convert to postscript with fax2ps utilizes the fax2ps program to convert the fax pages to a single CLASS 1 postscipt file that is piped to your printer. This is handled by the shell. Gefax passes the Print Area and Print Resolution arguments to fax2ps to give you sufficient control over the output. There are two points to be made about these settings.
1) Print Area relates to the size of the page file without margins. Not the page size.
2)Print Resolution is the resolution of the postscript file. Setting a high resolution will probably gain you nothing as the original fax page is only 204.1 x 195.6.
Let my print filter handle conversions does exactly that. The fax pages are sent to the specified printer and your print filter will either convert the files or fail. RedHat print filters will handle tiff files. (I guess all distro's will?)
Select OK to save your settings or Cancel to close without
saving.
